Saline residents prepare for a referendum on whether to adopt a proposed stringbean zoning plan for Michigan Avenue from the Saline River Bridge to Five Points. The plan faces strong support for growth and opposition over residential disruption.
Earl Robertson, 20, of Detroit, drowned at Wamplers Lake after leaping from his rowboat to aid companion John Michockt who had fallen in to retrieve a dropped oar. Robertson tangled in boat rope and could not swim to shore. The 3:30 p.m. accident led to a 5:40 p.m. body recovery by diver William Hill of Weston.
An NYC freight official in Ann Arbor says rumors of Saline Scon losing rail service are unfounded. He notes nearby Brooklyn and North Adams stations may close, but any Saline termination requires ICC approval and would take time. Rail service is expected to remain available in Saline for the foreseeable future.

The Busy Workers 4-H Club met at Diane Feldkamp's home. Diane reported on the 4-H Convention. Caroline Bower taught shortening measurement. Kay Gordon and Susan Robinson demonstrated chocolate chip cookies. Mary Sue Gordon showed fruit salad making. Doris Herter demonstrated freezing peas and Nancy Robinson explained washing jars for canning. The next meeting is July 3 at Doris Herter's home.
The Huron Valley Babe Ruth League enters week three with tight races in American led by Laine and pitcher John Thoss who has two one hitters. Pinckney leads National division after a first loss to Willow Run Americans and a three game win streak. An All Star game between American and National stars is planned for Friday July 25 at 8 p.m. with Miss Huron Valley chosen at a July 10 coaches meeting at WOIA studios.
