The Saline Jr. Chamber of Commerce Polio Diner raised 924.00 for the March of Dimes at Marty's Restaurant last Sunday. Over 300 attended the event served by Jaycees and the auxiliary. Gert rude Rankin and Marty Hemen way donated the restaurant space.
Funeral services for George C Handy publisher of the Ypsilanti Daily Press were held at 2 PM from Geer Funeral Home Ypsilanti. He was 71 and had been at University Hospital Ann Arbor since January 14. He joined the paper as a student at Eastern Michigan College became manager in 1908 bought the business in 1917 and moved the paper to 101 N Huron Street in 1922. He held multiple civic roles including Rotary Club and College Alumni Association and is survived by his wife a son Frank of Ypsilanti and a daughter Jane of New York.
Kiwanis Club of Saline names committee chairs for the coming year at a meeting at Martys restaurant led by President Bob Harrison. The list includes Chairs like Lauren Wild for Boys and Girls Work, Elmer Houghton for Vocational Guidance, Bob Tefft for Agriculture and Conservation, Wilson Scott for Finance, and Gottlob Walker for Programs and Music with several others across 16 panels.
Mayor Henry Leutheuser announced his panel of 1958 appointive city officers and commissioners. Appointees include E. J. Muir as clerk and treasurer Elwin Strait public works superintendent Stanton Roesen legal advisor Frank Deede street commissioner Everett D. Wolfin police and fire Fred Hill park cemetery and recreation Charles Kern building and zoning Hugh Reveling health and Carl Moehn assessor. Norma Jean Taylor leaves Observer to return to Eastern Michigan College at Ypsilanti after seven months guiding the public over the phone and in the office.
The gent shown is Bill Collins, newly hired as an advertising staffer for The Saline Observer. He spent 12 years at Sears Roebuck in Chicago as copywriter and editor, then served as advertising manager for firms in Holland and Grand Rapids. His latest prior role was with John B. Van Domelen Advertising Agency in Grand Rapids.
Saline Police Chief Kirby was surprised with a birthday party Saturday at his home. Guests included Luther Dicks Walley Crosbie Tom Hufford Eagle Prince and James Levlett and their spouses. Otto's Cheese Shoppe provided delicacies while Hugh Prince filmed scenes for keepsake as the force presented a Suburban car coat.

The Saline Business and Professional Women's Club received its charter at the Milan club's fifth anniversary dinner held at Marble Memorial Methodist Church. State and district officers attended, with Mae Wood named Saline president and Evelyn Burke installing officers in a candle light ceremony.
Allan J. Hertler received the Young Man of the Year award at the Royal Oak Junior Chamber banquet. He is the son of Rudolph and Mrs Hertler of 9640 Platt Road and a Michigan University Law and Business School graduate. He serves as Royal Oak city attorney, among the state's youngest in that post.
Michigan Milk Producers Association members gathered at Saline High School for their annual meeting. Ernest Girbach was reelected president with Albert Gall as vice president and Carl Seeger as secretary treasurer. The program featured criticism of Agriculture Secretary Benson over milk price figures and news of ongoing price- discussion between associations and Detroit dealers, with a contract expiring February 1, 1958. Delegates named include Armin Weidmay er, Charles Trinkle, William Hayes, and others named, reflecting regional representation.
Saline banks held annual meetings to reelect officers. Citizens Bank reelected Carl A. Curtiss as president and Harry A. Holmes as vice president and cashier. H W Kuebler was named assistant cashier and served on the board with Arthur Lutz, William Harwood and Clifford Simmons. Saline Savings Bank kept 1958 officers: William D. Crim president Wilson Scott executive vice president F O Weidman vice president Kenneth Rogers cashier Luella Lambarth and Mrs Waldo Gross as assistant cashiers. Saline Hornets versus Roosevelt of Ypsilanti has been rescheduled to Thursday night. The game will be played in Ypsilanti instead of Friday and was previously set for Friday evening.
The Saline school board opened three sealed bids January 27 for the 1.65 million dollar Saline High School bond issue. The First of Michigan Corporation offered 4.42 percent interest to be retired at 3.9 percent by 1985. Construction is expected to start in spring and finish by early 1959 with land already secured.
At the February 3 meeting the group will offer a welding session with Clyde Griffen as instructor. On February 10 Detroit Edison Company will give a farm wiring and fusing demonstration and motor care guidance. About seventeen farmers are enrolled. others are urged to join.
The Saline Woman's Club annual Guest Night on Tuesday February 11 at the Methodist Church will feature Lewis C. Reimann of Ann Arbor as speaker. His topic is the History of Michigan. The Education Department organized the program and the banquet will be served by church ladies with special music.
The Fun Club hosted two euchre parties for Saline Hospital building fund with strong attendance. In the first event Mrs. Reuben Finkbeiner and Mrs. Oscar Klein tied for first, with Mrs. Karl Bredernitz second and Miss Betty Ormsby third. men’s prizes went to Karl Theurer first, Lauren Jedele second, Wallace Jordan third. Lester Hanson won the galloper and Mrs. Karl Feldkamp received the door prize. The Friday night event saw Miss Velma Crittenden first, and a tie for second between Mrs. Carl Moehn and Mrs. Clara Finkbeiner with Mrs. Ralph Hunt third. Eldean Feldkamp and Harold Hieber tied for first, Erwin Wild second, Warren Rentschler third. Harold Hieber won the galloper and Lauren Jedele again had the door prize.
The Saline Play Center officers and mothers will gather Monday February 3 at 8 30 p m at the home of Mrs Kenneth Youngs to plan work and activities for the spring term with Mrs Warren Martin as assistant hostess.
The Saline Chamber of Commerce met Monday evening at Saline Savings Bank with president Ken Rogers presiding. Plans for the February 5 open meeting at the Saline American Legion were outlined, featuring Detroit Edison representatives to discuss industrial expansion in Saline and relate past experiences. Dollar Day promotions for February 14 and 15 were also discussed, with full advertising to appear next week.
The Saline Police Department logged multiple near and minor crashes. Incidents include a 1958 Chrysler and a 1953 Dodge tractor car carrier collision near Carl's Truck Stop on US-112, two more wrecks near Washtenaw County roads, and a 1955 Chevrolet striking a pole with injuries to Janice and Florence Strange. Additional fender benders occurred on US-112 near Saline and the Saline Ann Arbor road in Lodi Township, with property damage and one reported injury.
