Rest Helps Cows Do Job
Dairy cows work better after a rest period and should not be rebred until at least 60 days after calving. The body needs time to recover, and calving in good condition improves the cows readiness for the next journey. High quality roughage and 2 to 4 pounds of grain for six to eight weeks before calving help maintain condition. if roughage is poor or the cow is underconditioned, 10 to 12 pounds of grain may be needed the final month before calving.
