Saline F F A Week Observed By Local Future Farmers

Saline High School observes National Future Farmers of America Week from February 28 to March 1 with Saline FFA members led by President Marvin Marion and Advisor Aton Ealy. The group promotes rural leadership, better study outcomes, and farming career skills across 380000 members in 9000 chapters nationally.

Allan Grossman to Start Law Practice in Saline

Kon W. Grossman 28 will begin the practice of law in Saline on March 1 with offices in the Still Hotel Building. A University of Michigan Law School graduate, he is not new to Saline, living at Valley Farms with his wife Mrs. Grossman whose parents are Mr. and Mrs. Art Hagen of Saline.

Undersheriff to Act Temporarily After Sheriff’s Death

Undersheriff Kates Shaw will act as sheriff until a new appointment to fill the unexpired term is made by Probate Judge John Conlin with F. DeVine and Luella M. Smith, county officials, named to set the appointment date. Shaw began in the department as a deputy and later became undersheriff, moving to Ypsilanti in 1927 from Carey Ohio.

Two Father Son Banquets Held This Week

Two Father Son banquets were reported this week. At St Pauls Evangelical and Re formed Church the event featured Rev Alvin Siemsen, Ernest Girbach as toastmaster, and Dr Simon Fagerstrom of Eastern Michigan College speaking with color slides. Ed Heininger was honored as oldest father. David Heininger was youngest son. The Armbruster family had four sons present. At the Methodist Church a banquet for 130 attendees was hosted by the WSCS with Rev Robert Richards as toast master. Roy Rogers was honored as oldest father and Leo Jensen toasted the sons. A magic act by Roy Rew closed the program.

City workmen relocate parking meter in front of Saline Hotel

City superintendent Mike Strait says the meter was originally placed too far back, narrowing the space behind it. Crews moved the meter Monday morning to correct the alignment and improve curb space.

Sheriff Erwin Klager of Washtenaw Dies at Home

Sheriff Erwin L. Klager of Washtenaw County died of a heart attack at his Ann Arbor home after a brief illness. Born March 2, 1879 in Bridgewater, he earlier ran the Klager Hatchery and served as deputy, captain, and then sheriff for over 13 years. He married Florence Schaible in 1919. survived by wife, daughter, three grandchildren, and a brother. funeral services were held at Muehlig Chapel and St John’s Church Bridgewater with burial in the church cemetery. Memorials go to St John’s Church Bridgewater.

Executive Board Meeting of Ladies Aid Society

The Executive Board of the Ladies Aid Society of Federated Church will meet at 1 30 oclock Friday afternoon this week at Mrs. Paul Reed's home 209 West Russell Street. Plans for the Annual Banquet for Fathers and Sons, scheduled for March, will be discussed.

Fire destroys barn and silos on Saline farm

A Saline area farm loss includes a barn and two silos after a Monday night fire of undetermined origin. Twelve cows eight calves and a bull perished with two tractors and multiple pieces of equipment destroyed. Fire units contained the blaze despite wind as Milan and local departments aided, with insurance likely offsetting much of the damage.

Saline Chamber Plans March Officers Dinner Meeting

The Saline Chamber of Commerce met Monday night in the Saline Savings Bank directors chambers. They discussed the annual election of officers and a ladies night dinner at Marty Restaurant on March 27. A nominating committee of Gene Carpentier, chair, with Bob LaRose and Bob Harrison was chosen. A follow up meeting is set for Wednesday March 5 at 8 pm with the Executive Board at 7:30. Howard Sommers of Central Michigan State College will attend.

Saline Play Center Meeting at Mrs Daniel Moore Home

The next Saline Play Center meeting will be held at the home of Mrs Daniel Moore at 325 Bennett Street on March ard. Mr and Mrs Clarence Shaw visited their son and family in Maumee Ohio Sunday afternoon.

Adult Farmers Class Meeting Cancelled

The adult farmer class at Saline High School will not meet Monday March 3 due to teacher Mr. Alton Ealy attending the North Central State Teachers Trainers Conference in Chicago. Classes resume March 10 with March 17 the final session of the ten week course.

Freedom Home Destroyed By Fire In Freedom Township

A Wednesday evening fire destroyed the Martin Monroe home at 6675 Bethel Church Road in Freedom township. Saline Fire Department fought the blaze for hours after arriving about 5 15 pm. No injuries were reported though shotgun shells in a bedroom exploded during the blaze. Authorities speculated the fire may have started from an overheated coal furnace. The owner said partial loss was insured.
