State Police report 83 deaths in January 1958, down from 121 a year earlier, a 9g drop. Goals target a 10 percent annual reduction from 1957’s 1,519 deaths, with January the lowest for the month since 1952.
The Saline Public Library announces new shelves with titles for teen and adult readers. Notable entries include Strangers Among Us by Lois Hobart, Angel on Sois by Betty Cavanna, Reach for a Star by Florence Means, The Practical by Josephine Lawrence, My Neighbor's Wife a suspense tale, and The Four Winds by David Beaty.
Mr and Mrs Charles Kern attended the christening of their granddaughter at St Pauls Church in Chelsea last Sunday. The child was named Carol Lynn, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Schroen. After the service the family returned to the Schroen home for Sunday dinner.
A Holstein cow owned by Ypsilanti State Hospital, Pandora 35631100, produced 14 478 pounds of milk and 551 pounds of butterfat as a 4 year old. Michigan State University assisted with the Herd Improvement Registry testing as part of the Holstein association official production record program.
Funeral services for Fred G. Wiedmayer of Freedom Township were held Friday afternoon at Bethelchurch. He died after an auto accident on Pleasant Lake Road near his home and was born October 21 1879 in Lodi Township. He married Mary C. Dieterle in 1906 and is survived by his wife, five daughters, a son, 12 grandchildren, a brother, a sister, and several nieces and nephews.
Ernest L. Derkse, 27, Milan, suffered leg injuries last Monday afternoon when his 1955 Mercury left Fosdick Road, struck a tree off Bemis Road and totaled about 700 dollars. He could not explain the crash beyond slippery road conditions and alleged excessive speed. Senior officer Kirby of Saline Police investigated.
The notice advertises a limited bargain offering subscriptions to the Observer for one dollar on February 14 and 15, between 1 and 2 PM. Limit one year per family, sale ends promptly at 2 PM each day.
Mr and Mrs Daniel McLean are vacationing in Florida. Also in Florida are Mr and Mrs Norman Guenther enjoying time in the sunny south.
Members of the Saline Planning Commission presented the rezoning plan at a Monday evening open meeting in the elementary school auditorium. About 75 to 100 attendees debated whether to accept or reject the plan with concerns centered on Highway 112 relocation and the impact on tax revenue, industry, and school costs. The consensus praised the commission but called for more study to craft a workable rezoning plan for the city.
An Ann Arbor man, Mr. George Klager, reports fast results from a Saline Observer classified ad leading to a rental of his place. He previously ran ads in a larger city paper with no results before switching to Saline Observer. He says the paper delivers quick responses for sale or rent.
Mrs. Carrie Sessions of Ann Arbor was named chairwoman of the County Nursing Committee by E. C. Laetz. Washtenaw Red Cross activities include blood banks care of the sick and injured disaster nursing and training for nurses aides.
Ice fishermen are reminded shelters must be removed from lakes before conditions become unsafe. Noncompliance may incur removal costs plus fines and court charges. A Gladstone resident was ordered to pay a $25 fine and $7.80 in court costs for violating the state law.
Robison Johnson Implement Co invites area farmers and families to Pancake Day on February 15. Free pancakes sausage and coffee served 10 AM to 4 PM. Attendees can tour the new farm equipment exhibit and enjoy the Big Saline Dollar Days event.
Members of Westminster Fellowship Youth Group of Federated Church will enjoy a Valentine Party after their Sunday meeting. The devotional starts at 6 30 led by Patsy Johnson with Rev Henry McKenzie leading a discussion How About College The event occurs at Miss Janice Nielsen 201 West Henry Street refreshments provided Janice and Miss Joan Austin arrange entertainment and Valentine features for the hour All teenagers of the congregation are invited to attend.
Dr. James B. Shaw, once a Saline resident and Yale Michigan native, has been appointed Assistant to the Surgeon General of the United States. He has served in the Public Health Service since 1952 and led the Indian Health Division since July 1955. He studied at Eastern Michigan College and the University of Michigan Medical School, taught at Saline High School 1929–1931, and now lives in Washington, D C with wife Sylvia Gross and their children Sandra and James W.
The Trinity Church Ladies Aid Society held a luncheon on February 5 in the church basement. Guests were from the Salem Lutheran Ladies Aid Society. The program was guided by program chairman Mrs. Albert Bredernitz.
Saline merchants launch DOLLAR DAYS with Friday and Saturday sales. Chamber of Commerce promotes Promote Saline as prices drop to cost or below across cooperating stores. Free parking east of Ann Arbor street all day Friday and Saturday encourages shoppers to visit Saline.
Mgr William Harwood of Route 5 Ann Arbor renewed his subscription to the Saline Observer Friday morning. He has been a subscriber since his marriage and says he cannot get along without the paper or its delivery. The farmer relies on the calendar to stay posted on local activities.
Mrs Kenneth Gates president of Federated Church Women’s Class announces no February gathering due to the ongoing Family Night Series schedule.
William Madison of Detroit Edison outlined a development plan at the Saline Chamber of Commerce urging a Planning Commission, local job opportunities, and industrial land designation. He predicted a 1975 regional industrial corridor and Michigan's population growth, stressing immediate action and city planning.
