George Valentine Cook, longtime Sa line business figure and former deputy sheriff, died Sunday after a ten day illness. A well known local public servant for over 25 years, he also once ran for sheriff reflecting his deep involvement in area affairs.
Longtime village president and justice of the peace Geo W Cook died at 93. He operated a Chevrolet garage for 21 years and earlier ran a livery business on East Michigan avenue. He served as a federal liquor investigator in Detroit during prohibition and was known for aiding transports of contraband liquor. He is survived by Grace B Cook, a son Walter D, a daughter Mrs. Lynford Bracey, five grandchildren, and was buried at Oakwood cemetery after services conducted by Rev. S T Dunk.
National Boy Scout Week activities include a Sunday church service with Rev. Ede preaching for the Scouts and Charles Collins receiving the Hagle Badge from Scout Executive MacPeek. A Thursday rally at the school with Platt Milan and Bridgewater troops features a potluck, moving pictures, songs, games, and a Rotary Club group will attend.
Mark B. Sugden spoke at The Tavern last Thursday noon on the youth problem facing young men aged 18 to 25 in seeking opportunity. He said the issue is vast and unsolved by any one formula and will require time and the best thought of the nation’s leaders to resolve.
