Santa Draws Early Christmas Gift in Saline

The Saline Chamber of Commerce will host a charity Christmas drawing at 3 pm Saturday at Saline Savings Bank corner. A full size boys bicycle, displayed at Wight's Cleaners, will be given to the winner whose ticket is drawn from those deposited by local merchants. The bike can be exchanged for a girl’s bike or smaller size at Gamble store. Santa and chamber members will oversee the drawing, with letters to Santa contributing cards for entrants.

Homemaking Unit Presents Dresses To Goodfellows

The F. H. A and Saline High School Homemaking class made 18 dresses in size 8 for Ypsilanti Goodfellows. Material was provided by Goodfellows, notions and trimmings by the girls, with Miss Lemmer and adult tailor instructor Mrs. Betty Kuebler aiding. Read list of participating students.

George Bonich Elected President of Holy Name Society

The Holy Name society of St. Andrews Church elected George Bonich as president at its annual meeting. Dan Charobee was named vice president and Harry Miller secretary-treasurer. Officers assume duties on the second Monday in January.

A Saline Youth Hostel tour highlights its long history dating to 1937 on Milkey road. Manager Johnny Rule and hosts John and Mrs Rule welcome international visitors, with travelers from Brazil to Germany listed in the visitors book. Ella Lee Lake nearby offers swimming and picnicking as the Swiss Youth Hostel official visits en route to a Metropolitan New meeting.

Saline High School bonds approved for 1.65 million

The Saline School Board approved 1.65 million dollars in bonds on December 10 for the new Saline High School to be built on North Ann Arbor road. Bonds will be offered to brokerage houses January 27 1958 with construction expected to start in spring. Leo Jensen said sealed bids would be invited from contractors after plans were finalized. Public borrowing by the commission totals 3.58 million. Other schools listed include Buckley Community School Wexford County 7000 state aid notes and Walkerville Rural Community School 20000 state aid notes plus Lake School District Ionia County 3000 bonds for additions.

City Council Orders Water Equipment

At the council meeting John Kaury of Industrial Chemicals Inc presented data on alleviating iron in the city water system. The equipment is expected to show marked improvement by next spring and will clarify color though it won’t change taste or soften water. The city will install the system immediately at about 1100 dollars with possible Saline delivery next week and continuation if satisfactory.

Grand Finale at Schmid's Market Marking 60th Anniversary

Schmid's Food Market celebrates six decades with a Saturday grand finale at the store. A large birthday cake will be shared by employees Thursday through Saturday, plus free balloons for children. Thirty free food baskets will be drawn from numbers on baskets.

Reverend and Mrs. McKenzie visit the First Presbyterian Church in Bucyrus Ohio where their son Reverend H S McKenzie serves as pastor. Reverend Henry McKenzie delivers the baptism sermon for his three month old granddaughter.

Tommy Phelps Breaks Leg In Fall On Ice

A group of children playing trains on the ice at Saline Elementary School toppled, injuring Tommy Phelps who suffered a broken leg. He is hospitalized at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor. Friends and classmates are urged to send cards and visit during his recovery.
