Saline council discussed changing the zoning on E Michigan Avenue 200 block from multiple family to commercial but rejected the plan. The meeting also approved a 10 cent per hour wage increase for city employees and set an open lease at the city disposal plant on Monroe Street from 1 to 7 pm Thursday.
On Rally Day September 15 Methodist Church Sunday School begins at 11 and will continue to meet at that time. Several local residents returned Monday night from a weekend at Interlochen Music Camp, including Mrs Merritt Martin Sr Miss Sally Stimpson Mrs George Austin and Bob Austin. Miss Joan Austin also returned with them after a summer at Interlochen where she took part in vocal and instrumental concerts on a scholarship. Mr and Mrs Arthur Katterjohn and their sons returned home after a week at Interlochen.
Over the next three weeks Saline hosts the Saline Sidewalk Sale August 30 31 with merchant participation banners tickets and ads funded by the Chamber of Commerce. A back to school push follows with notices for upcoming ads and event submissions before August 27. The Saline Community Fair runs September 11 14 featuring booths livestock exhibits rides and contests.
The Bailey Recreation bowling alley will open for regular open bowling on August 23 with leagues starting in the second week of September. Alleys and approaches have been refinished and new automatic pin setters installed under a ten year lease, with pinsetters installed July 8 at about $5000.00.
A final list of prizes for the Miss Saline contest is announced by Don Rapp with many local donors contributing gifts and cash. The event, open to unmarried Saline area young women 16 to 24, will coincide with the Saline Community Fair on Sept. 13. Entries due by Sept. 5 with photos to C. Merritt Martin.
The Saline Lamb Club met Sunday for a potluck at 12 30 in Bridgewater with about 40 members. Ten farms visited Lawrence Boettner Emerson Haeus sler Walter Lindeman R. E Schumacher Robert Tefft Walter Herter Ernest Girbach Raymond Dirbach and Clark Gordon. The tour concluded with refreshments and a lamb judging contest won by Kirk Gordon in the boys division and Doris Herter in the girls division with prizes awarded to the victors. George Bradley, 22, formerly of Saline township, was returned from La Grange Kentucky for violating two probationary sentences. He received 3 to 14 years in the Southern Michigan Prison at Jackson on each violation count. He had been found guilty of violating probation and left the state two days after the second sentence.
Michigan forecast shows temperatures near or below normal with a high of 82 and low around 62. Expect a cool Tuesday, warming Wednesday and Thursday, then cooler Friday and Saturday. Precipitation average 0.25 to 0.5 inches with scattered showers late Thursday and Friday.
Saline Area Schools announce a September 4 start for the fall term with 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. high school hours and 8:55 a.m. to 3:35 p.m. elementary hours. The day length increases by a half hour to ease overcrowding. Faculty changes include many new hires across elementary and secondary levels.
The Universal Die Casting and Manufacturing Co held its annual employee picnic on Saturday August 17 with an open house 9 30 to 11 30 p m at Monroe Street plant for workers families and the community A noon dinner at City Park served 375 people Prize winners included Mrs Bessie Utley Robert Bredernitz Edwin Gibson Eugene Eadie and Christopher VarOver Children won numerous events from running races to sack races with many prizes and later bingo awarded many gifts Beulah Kellogg chaired the event with Erwin Schneidler master of ceremonies and a full committee of volunteers managing prizes food and judging
Washtenaw County unveils an experimental rubberized pavement on Saline Ann Arbor Rd between Wagner and Saline. A railroad carload arrived in Ann Arbor and was heated to 200 degrees for application. The project, costing about 2500 dollars, aims for durability with comparable care to standard blacktop. A wedding shower for Karen Beck was hosted by Arlene Conner on August 20.
Saline WOIA will go on the air October 1 with two 170 foot radio towers completed yesterday. Meredith Bixby says studios will be in Saline and in a new transmitter building on Brassow Road. Erection was by an Indiana firm. three-man crew built the towers in a week. Directors include Eugene Hannah and Henry Leutheuser. stockholders listed.
Saline and the Ypsilanti Woods men, both unbeaten in the tournament, advance to the Inter-City Baseball League championship. Saline defeated Wayne 5-0 as Sonny Hoeft hurled a four-hitter. Wayne led the regular season.
The Bond-Forbes School reunion gathered on the Macon road grounds with a noon pot luck. Founded in 1837, it celebrated its cen tenary in 1937 and has long drawn former pupils and teachers every two years to renew friendships. The district closed the school and Duncan Robison later bought the building and grounds.
