Easter observations fill Saline, with churches full as worshippers recall the Resurrection. Lilies symbolize purity and the Trinity, while many who rarely attend church join services on Easter Sunday. An error hides the rest of Saline Sidelights on Page 2 Personal Notes.
The Willing Workers Club met April 15 with 27 members present. Hazel Gordon presided as they sang and observed the flag salute. Reports from secretary treasurer and committees were read, and Mrs. Zahn reported on the Ann Arbor federation meeting. Plans for a new girls home project were discussed with Mrs. Bixby outlining cooperation nationwide. The May meeting will be hosted by Mrs. Minnie Hammond at Judd Road with Juncheon served afterward.
The 2nd Annual Arts Festival features the Art Department and Vocal Music Department with art displays and vocal performances. It takes place Friday April 30 at 8:00 p m and Saturday May 1 at 3:00 p m in the School Gymnas ium. Mrs. Jean Taylor and Mr. Arthur Katterjohn coordinate.
Mayor Leutheuser of Gaylord will swap desks with Mayor Henry Leutheuser for a day on May 5 as part of Michigan Week events. Gaylord’s Mayor Douglas Hird will assume control here for the day to promote unity among Michigan municipalities.
Saline FFA sponsored an air tour at Ann Arbor Airport on Sunday April 11 with 45 passengers. Three planes piloted by Roger Porter Morenci George Wood and Dwight Reynolds covered the boys farms and nearby sites from 1 00 to 4 00 p m. Some air sickness noted but overall reaction was positive. Special Council Meeting adjourned after approving building permits for Ray Cerensky residence at 207 N Lewis St cost 12000 and Francis Karn garage at 714 W Michigan cost 400. Att'y Roesch to prepare papers to clear unpaid 1948 personal taxes. Cemetery order forbids foundation work two weeks before Decoration Day. Depot St drainage contact Murray Knowles county drainage official. City to purchase surveyor instruments from J C Little. City Park control to be further studied. Meeting adjourned.
Mr and Mrs Howard Downs hosted her parents Mr and Mrs Philip Maxwell of Chicago for the weekend. Miss Judy Haswell of the University of Michigan stayed with her parents Mr and Mrs Max Haswell while recovering from a fever and poison ivy.
Saline Woman's Club met at Mrs. Rudolph Hertler's home on April 13 with Mrs. Harold Gray presiding. The group discussed the Adult Education program in Ann Arbor May 5 and 6, the State Federation report, and club responsibilities for the Infirmary event on May 25. Jean Taylor spoke on New Angles in Art, showing children’s artwork and a painting film. A Silent Auction raised 27.80 for the treasury, followed by tea hosted by Mrs. Chas Kern and Mrs. Otto Hagans.
Joseph Graf, son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Graf of Laine, completed eight weeks of Army Basic Combat Training with the 3rd Armored Division at Fort Knox Kentucky. After a 10 day leave, he will undergo specialized training before permanent assignment. Mr and Mrs Fred Giesel Jr and son Steven visited his parents in Cincinnati and attended a first night performance of The King and I with a Broadway cast.
The Michigan Municipal Finance Commission approved a $615,000 bond issue to build and furnish a new elementary school, acquire additional sites, and remodel the Saline high school. The district of Saline Township No. 6 fractional sets a maximum interest rate of four percent.
Karen Taylor receives the Foster Foundation Scholarship from the Michigan Youth Symphony for the National Music Camp eight week program at Inter Jochen. Jim Austin earns the same camp scholarship for his work last year as Saline’s top Foster Scholar. both praised by Orion Dalley.
Saline area families announce births: Hugene Eadie and wife welcome a son on April 13. Grindle pair in Milan report a daughter born April 15. Murray couple also notes a birth on April 15. Church family of Grass Lake greet a daughter born April 17. Lavery family of Saline celebrate a daughter born April 18. Medical note lists Jacob Finkbeiner of Saline. Tonsillectomies include Jean Rock and David Holek of Milan, Frank Thanady and Geraldine McCullers of Maybee, Linda Gable, Ronald McFall and Caroline Ross of Willis, and Very Wandh of Britton. Surgical: George Ewanchiw of Milan.
Constance Mae Gonser and Jer aldine Joyce Jordan were among 142 students with honor point averages between 2.50 and 2.99 listed at Michigan State Normal College.
A display of hooked rugs will be shown at the Federated Church on Wednesday April 28 from 2 to 5 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A silver tea will be served. The event is sponsored by the Rug Hookers of Saline.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Klumpp hosted a Palm Sunday confirmation celebration for daughter Barbara. Police Chief Robert Love apprehended Stephen A. Hawkins, 54, of Detroit, for drunken driving at 6 on Sunday. He received a $50 fine plus $50 costs and 80 days in jail, with a 90 day license suspension. Wayne Predmore escaped injury when his car overturned on Bemis Road last Saturday. two passengers were unharmed and the vehicle was a total wreck.
Rev H L Engle leaves Tuesday for the San Carlos Apache and Fort Apache reservations in east central Arizona. He is joined by Rev Kreie of Belleville. They will visit 30 East Fork Mission Stations and plan a conference on April 30. The largest school serves 280 Indian children, with 586 across four schools. They expect to return by May 6.
A and B Tool Company in Saline maneuvers expansion as it buys adjacent properties to erect an 8000 square foot building. The move supports larger machines and retooling with a 7 ton overhead crane. The plant, started Aug 17 1942, now employs 53.
Last Saturday's Easter Egg Hunt drew about 250 children. Eight prizes were awarded in each division. Kindergarten and first grade winners are listed with names. 2nd to 4th grade winners receive Easter Baskets or items like paint sets, Key Word games, Schaffer pens, and five large chocolate eggs.
Bonnie Lou Still two died Saturday in University Hospital Ann Arbor from unclear cause. Born January 31 1952 in Saline General Hospital Saline she was daughter of Mr and Mrs Billy R Still of Lenawee County. Survived by sister Barbara Jean four brothers Charles Alan Neil Curtis maternal grandparents Frank Randall of Saline paternal grandmother Stella Still Saline and many relatives Private funeral at First Congregational Clinton with Rev Murray Hewgill officiating burial Riverside Cemetery Proctor Funeral Home in charge.
Pfc. Albert Hoeft, who graduated from a Secret Military School at Hanau, Germany on March 8, is assigned to the pitching staff of the 4th Div. Artillery Ball Team. He left Kirch-Genes with the wiring outfit for Hanau and will travel throughout greater Germany with his team. Hoeft enlisted April 15, 1958, trained at Fort Riley, Kansas with the 10th Infantry Division, and sailed for Germany on September 8, 1953.

The Ann Arbor Regional Spring Conference of the Women s Guild will be held in Albion Michigan on Thursday April 29 at the Salem Church 1138 West Pine Street. The main address will be delivered by Dr W W Whitehouse President of Albion College. The afternoon features a business session and a drama with Mrs W Kohler in the main part. Local officers include Miss Esther Landwehr Mrs Charles Kern and Rev and Mrs T W Menzel.
The Youth Fellowship of St Pauls Church plans a Sunday banquet at 6:30 PM at the church to honor recently confirmed youths. Toastmaster Glen Hagen leads the program with invocation by Rev A Siemsen, singing by Sallee Wood, welcomes by Dick Weisenreider, response by Kathryn Raus, speaker Charles Jacquith, and Benediction by Rev Siemsen.
Mae Lossing of Deerfield will be the new station attendant at Hoefts Gas Station replacing Dave Bred ernitz who is entering the army. Lossing and his wife Maxine Fosdick of Saline have three children and plan to move to Saline soon. He served four years in the army and has ten years of experience in service stations. Hoeft aims to improve service and add a complete mechanical repair department with Lossing's help.
Mr and Mrs George Steketee and children of Toledo Mr and Mrs Kenneth Carruthers and children of Niles and John Merchant of Detroit spent the weekend at the Robert Merchant home.
