Willing Workers Club Reports and Plans For May Meeting

The Willing Workers Club met April 15 with 27 members present. Hazel Gordon presided as they sang and observed the flag salute. Reports from secretary treasurer and committees were read, and Mrs. Zahn reported on the Ann Arbor federation meeting. Plans for a new girls home project were discussed with Mrs. Bixby outlining cooperation nationwide. The May meeting will be hosted by Mrs. Minnie Hammond at Judd Road with Juncheon served afterward.

Second Annual Arts Festival at the School Gym

The 2nd Annual Arts Festival features the Art Department and Vocal Music Department with art displays and vocal performances. It takes place Friday April 30 at 8:00 p m and Saturday May 1 at 3:00 p m in the School Gymnas ium. Mrs. Jean Taylor and Mr. Arthur Katterjohn coordinate.

Mayors Exchange Duty Across Michigan On May Day

Mayor Leutheuser of Gaylord will swap desks with Mayor Henry Leutheuser for a day on May 5 as part of Michigan Week events. Gaylord’s Mayor Douglas Hird will assume control here for the day to promote unity among Michigan municipalities.

Saline FFA Air Tour Boosts Soil Erosion Awareness

Saline FFA sponsored an air tour at Ann Arbor Airport on Sunday April 11 with 45 passengers. Three planes piloted by Roger Porter Morenci George Wood and Dwight Reynolds covered the boys farms and nearby sites from 1 00 to 4 00 p m. Some air sickness noted but overall reaction was positive. Mr and Mrs Howard Downs hosted her parents Mr and Mrs Philip Maxwell of Chicago for the weekend. Miss Judy Haswell of the University of Michigan stayed with her parents Mr and Mrs Max Haswell while recovering from a fever and poison ivy.

Woman's Club Meeting Highlights Saline April Event

Saline Woman's Club met at Mrs. Rudolph Hertler's home on April 13 with Mrs. Harold Gray presiding. The group discussed the Adult Education program in Ann Arbor May 5 and 6, the State Federation report, and club responsibilities for the Infirmary event on May 25. Jean Taylor spoke on New Angles in Art, showing children’s artwork and a painting film. A Silent Auction raised 27.80 for the treasury, followed by tea hosted by Mrs. Chas Kern and Mrs. Otto Hagans.

Graf Completes Army Basic Training at Fort Knox

Joseph Graf, son of Mr and Mrs Edwin Graf of Laine, completed eight weeks of Army Basic Combat Training with the 3rd Armored Division at Fort Knox Kentucky. After a 10 day leave, he will undergo specialized training before permanent assignment. Mr and Mrs Fred Giesel Jr and son Steven visited his parents in Cincinnati and attended a first night performance of The King and I with a Broadway cast.

State Approves Saline School Bond Issue

The Michigan Municipal Finance Commission approved a $615,000 bond issue to build and furnish a new elementary school, acquire additional sites, and remodel the Saline high school. The district of Saline Township No. 6 fractional sets a maximum interest rate of four percent.

Drunken driver arrested and fined by Ann Arbor court

Police Chief Robert Love apprehended Stephen A. Hawkins, 54, of Detroit, for drunken driving at 6 on Sunday. He received a $50 fine plus $50 costs and 80 days in jail, with a 90 day license suspension. Wayne Predmore escaped injury when his car overturned on Bemis Road last Saturday. two passengers were unharmed and the vehicle was a total wreck.

Rev Engle Heads to Arizona for Indian Reservations

Rev H L Engle leaves Tuesday for the San Carlos Apache and Fort Apache reservations in east central Arizona. He is joined by Rev Kreie of Belleville. They will visit 30 East Fork Mission Stations and plan a conference on April 30. The largest school serves 280 Indian children, with 586 across four schools. They expect to return by May 6.

A and B Tool Company in Saline maneuvers expansion as it buys adjacent properties to erect an 8000 square foot building. The move supports larger machines and retooling with a 7 ton overhead crane. The plant, started Aug 17 1942, now employs 53.

Easter Egg Hunt Yields Prizes for School Kids

Saline Soldier Assigned to 4th Division Artillery Ball Team

Pfc. Albert Hoeft, who graduated from a Secret Military School at Hanau, Germany on March 8, is assigned to the pitching staff of the 4th Div. Artillery Ball Team. He left Kirch-Genes with the wiring outfit for Hanau and will travel throughout greater Germany with his team. Hoeft enlisted April 15, 1958, trained at Fort Riley, Kansas with the 10th Infantry Division, and sailed for Germany on September 8, 1953.

New Station Attendant at Hoefts Mae Lossing Named

Mae Lossing of Deerfield will be the new station attendant at Hoefts Gas Station replacing Dave Bred ernitz who is entering the army. Lossing and his wife Maxine Fosdick of Saline have three children and plan to move to Saline soon. He served four years in the army and has ten years of experience in service stations. Hoeft aims to improve service and add a complete mechanical repair department with Lossing's help.
