Drowning Tragedy at Roanoke River Outing Ends in Death
Russell Lee, 22, son of Mr and Mrs J P Lee of Rapids Street, drowned Sunday while swimming with friends near Rook's Island on the Roanoke River about three miles west of the bridge. Divers found the body Monday about 50 feet from the last sighting. funeral services planned for Tuesday afternoon.

Drowned Man Found After Sunday Outing Causes Citywide Search
Coroner Williams and officers Massey and Gray led a large search by river banks and boats for the drowned man. A body was recovered after divers brought it to the surface. The coroner found no signs of foul play and attributed the tragedy to a Sunday outing by city youth. Funeral services were held at the Williams Funeral Home with interment in Southampton County. Russell Lee, son of Mr and Mrs J P Lee, survived by three brothers. Pallbearers listed.
