Pines Pay Profits in Halifax County

Halifax County farmers find their timber a safe investment with steady growth. J B Britt and extension staff studied a 38 year old loblolly stand on Mr R Maddry’s farm noting 58 cords produced in 38 years and a potential 50.3 cords per acre on standing timber. Net income estimates range from 7.65 to 11.18 percent on $30 per acre land value, with litter and hog pasturing contributing extra income. Timber is urged as a farm asset to cut costs, reduce overhead, and help spare cotton and tobacco surpluses.
