Acme Steps Up Efforts To Cut Down Smoke Nuisance

Acme Steel of Riverdale says it is stepping up work on improving its gas cleaning system at the Little Calumet River plant to reduce smoke. Despite a 750000 dollar installation in 1939 the system fails to meet specs, forcing monthly natural gas use costing about 30000 dollars to heat cupola air. Grief from residents prompts reviews by experts including Armour Research Foundation as officials seek a full solution.
