Acme Steps Up Efforts To Cut Down Smoke Nuisance

Acme Steel Company of Riverdale is stepping up work to reduce smoke from its Little Calumet River plant. Officials report tests are ongoing to improve gas cleaning systems installed in 1959 at a cost of three quarters of a million dollars. The system has not met specifications, costing thousands monthly, leading to use of natural gas for hot air blast heating at about $30,000 monthly while experts from Armour Research Foundation are consulted for solutions. The company emphasizes obligations to nearby residents and regrets any distress caused.
