Marine recalls four battles after Iwo Jima letters home

Dalton's Corporal Clarence Pfotenhauer describes four battles with the 24th Marines of the 4th Division from Roi Namur Saipan and Tinian to Iwo Jima. He recalls fear, endurance, mail from home, and a wish to return home. He notes the Iwo Jima fight lasted twenty five days with heavy sniper and cave fighting.

Red Cross War Fund Over Top In Chicago Area

Martin H. Kennelly, chairman of the 1945 Chicago Red Cross War Fund campaign, thanks contributors and 90,000 volunteers after the drive oversubscribed by more than 700,000. The Chicago area quota was 11.3 million. receipts reached 12,024,060. He credits teamwork and praise for media support and household canvassing across the city and suburbs.
