Rent Registry Push at Harvey Branch Office

John J. Van Der Aa, Harvey branch manager, urges landlords to register rental properties with the OPA Rent Control Office in the Harvey Post Office building basement. The office serves southern Cook County outside Chicago. Tenants should have landlord registration copies. owners must file a Change of Tenancy within five days of occupancy. The Harvey Rent Office operates 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Sunday. inquiries by mail or phone are welcome.

Thornton taxes hit record $1.32 million to May 1

Collector Walter Haines reports Thornton township total taxes collected through May 1 reached 1,323,571.70 dollars, the largest in the township’s history and reflecting a strong revenue period for the community.

Warren Coleman Missing in Action in Europe

The War Department reports Private Warren M Coleman has been missing in action since April 14 after serving with the Seventh Army infantry division. He entered service in July 1944 and last wrote April 10. His wife Ruth Petersen, and two sons, await any word as his Joliet and Dolton relatives hold out hope. Another update notes Private Arthur W Ganser, once listed missing, was liberated and headed home via Camp Kilmer.

Pfc Howard Van Clay Receives Purple Heart in Philippines

Pfc Howard R. Van Clay of Dolton Illinois earned the Purple Heart for a slight arm wound during a 37th Infantry Division action near Fort Stotsenburg Philippines. His unit, the 129th Infantry Regiment, fought six days to seize airstrip installations at Clark Field and push toward Manila. He served 32 months overseas in the Fiji and Solomons theaters and landed at Lingayen Gulf on D Day as part of the invasion force.

Local Brake Check Program Suspended for Day of Prayer

The Riverdale police department announced the brake check program will suspend on Sunday May 18 a Day of Prayer declared by President Truman. Testing resumes Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20 at Atlantic Street lanes near 138th and 144th streets with hours 2 to 5 p m Saturday and 10 a m to 3 p m Sunday. Nearly 200 cars were tested last Sunday and public officials from Hazelcrest Hammond and Blue Island observed testing.

Rev Robert Brodfuehrer Named Assistant at St Marys

The Rev John N Weiler of St Marys Riverdale announced the Rev Robert Brodfuehrer, formerly ordained at Mundelein Illinois, has been appointed assistant pastor at St Marys. The Rev William J Rooney, previously in that role since Rev Matthias Hoffman left last December, has been transferred to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Chicago.

Two Survivors Arrive in States From Okinawa Sinkings

Orland F. Grant of Dalton and Rodger Rost of Riverdale were among 39 Chicago area navy crewmen in the first group of nearly 1,000 survivors from ships sunk by Japan near Okinawa. Rost served on the destroyer Calhoun, sunk April 6, and his note to parents confirmed his safety. Grant served on a landing craft and was among those reaching San Francisco by early week.

V Day Observance Quiet Here Across Community
