The Mighty 7th War Loan opens May 14 and ends June 30 with the largest individual quota yet. Officials urge Americans to buy more war bonds to fund postwar needs and support troops in the Pacific while Europe is secured. Payroll savers report progress as they add extra bonds through May and June.
John J. Van Der Aa, Harvey branch manager, urges landlords to register rental properties with the OPA Rent Control Office in the Harvey Post Office building basement. The office serves southern Cook County outside Chicago. Tenants should have landlord registration copies. owners must file a Change of Tenancy within five days of occupancy. The Harvey Rent Office operates 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily except Sunday. inquiries by mail or phone are welcome.
Collector Walter Haines reports Thornton township total taxes collected through May 1 reached 1,323,571.70 dollars, the largest in the township’s history and reflecting a strong revenue period for the community.
The War Department reports Private Warren M Coleman has been missing in action since April 14 after serving with the Seventh Army infantry division. He entered service in July 1944 and last wrote April 10. His wife Ruth Petersen, and two sons, await any word as his Joliet and Dolton relatives hold out hope. Another update notes Private Arthur W Ganser, once listed missing, was liberated and headed home via Camp Kilmer.
Pfc Howard R. Van Clay of Dolton Illinois earned the Purple Heart for a slight arm wound during a 37th Infantry Division action near Fort Stotsenburg Philippines. His unit, the 129th Infantry Regiment, fought six days to seize airstrip installations at Clark Field and push toward Manila. He served 32 months overseas in the Fiji and Solomons theaters and landed at Lingayen Gulf on D Day as part of the invasion force.
The Riverdale police department announced the brake check program will suspend on Sunday May 18 a Day of Prayer declared by President Truman. Testing resumes Saturday May 19 and Sunday May 20 at Atlantic Street lanes near 138th and 144th streets with hours 2 to 5 p m Saturday and 10 a m to 3 p m Sunday. Nearly 200 cars were tested last Sunday and public officials from Hazelcrest Hammond and Blue Island observed testing.
The Rev John N Weiler of St Marys Riverdale announced the Rev Robert Brodfuehrer, formerly ordained at Mundelein Illinois, has been appointed assistant pastor at St Marys. The Rev William J Rooney, previously in that role since Rev Matthias Hoffman left last December, has been transferred to Our Lady of Good Counsel in Chicago.
Zelda Bock, treasurer of the Paul Gall Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary, explains that the memorial poppy sale on Poppy Day May 26 funds relief for living veterans and families. Volunteers carry out the sale, ensuring every penny supports disabled veterans and dependents.
Orland F. Grant of Dalton and Rodger Rost of Riverdale were among 39 Chicago area navy crewmen in the first group of nearly 1,000 survivors from ships sunk by Japan near Okinawa. Rost served on the destroyer Calhoun, sunk April 6, and his note to parents confirmed his safety. Grant served on a landing craft and was among those reaching San Francisco by early week.
The Ivanhoe PTA will hear an American Red Cross speaker on Wednesday May 16 at 3 pm in Roosevelt school. Mrs F Tucker will install the new officers for the coming year. A silver donation will be taken for the servicemen's center. A social hour follows with hostesses listed and care provided for small children during the meeting.

Members of the Walther Leagues of St Pauls Lutheran church in Dalton will present William Ellis Jones Jumping Jewels on Friday and Saturday May 11 and 12 at St Pauls auditorium. The play centers on a tourist hotel owner amid a jewel theft suspense.
Mrs. Mary Schneider 80 died Wednesday at home 310 East 136th Street Riverdale. Born February 21 1865 in Stahl Russia she came to America in 1907 and lived in Riverdale 88 years. Survived by two sons George Riverdale and Michael Beecher Jr six grandchildren seven great grandchildren and three sisters in California. Service Friday at 2 p.m. from St Pauls Lutheran Dalton with burial Oakland Cemetery.
V E Day was received with sober reflection rather than celebration as stores closed and schools dismissed. Special church services were well attended at St Marys and other local churches with prayers for peace and gratitude for European victory while noting the ongoing Pacific war.

The Ivanhoe Garden Club announces its annual plant sale Saturday May 19 from 1 pm to 3 pm at Ivanhoe Park on the east side of the Illinois Central. A large variety of flowers will be offered at reasonable prices. History suggests the plants sell quickly. buyers are advised to come early.
Pfc. Robert Klinkhammer returned to the army air base at Sioux City Iowa on Wednesday after a six day furlough at his home.
