Riverdale Board Names Yearly Committees and Officers

Riverdale Trustees approve committee allocations for the 1945 46 year with President Claussen confirming appointments to Finance Streets and Alleys Drainage Police Fire and Water Works and other panels. He reappointed village officers and named 24 special police to serve as needed with fifteen named for Arcady Farms Milling company venue. The railroad duct maintenance remains village responsibility under the 1981 contract and a June Local Improvements meeting will discuss related railroad matters.

Program of Varied Interests Planned for UHS & JC PTA

Thornton Township high school and Junior College PTA meets Tuesday evening May 22 at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium Harvey. An excellent speaker will address active and discharged servicemen and their friends. New officers will be installed. A community singing session led by Walter Armbruster and a marimba solo by William Haase are on the program with colors presented by Riverdale and Dolton Scouts. The Thornioneers provide special music in the cafeteria during the social hour.

Polkow Rites Held For Clara H Polkow In Thornton

Funeral services for Clara H Polkow age 75 were held this afternoon at St Pauls Lutheran Church Thornton. She died Tuesday morning at her daughter Lucilles home 215 Maple Lane Thornton where she had lived four years. Born February 3 1869 in Fillmore Wisconsin she is survived by three daughters Niola Williamson Lucille Bruegmann Lillian Bruegmann and Victor Polkow all of Thornton a sister Ida Bertram Chicago and two brothers Otto Schuster Fillmore and Oscar Schuster Sheboygan Falls Wisconsin Interment followed at Oak Lawn cemetery Bachmann funeral home directed arrangements.

Local Poppy Day Means to Honor War Dead and Aid Veterans

Mrs. Margaret Meginnis the Poppy Day chair for Paul Gall Unit American Legion Auxiliary explains the meaning of Poppy Day and its benefits. Poppies symbolize remembrance for World War dead and provide employment and rehabilitation for disabled veterans who make them. The unit aims to sell 5,000 poppies this year and invites volunteers.

Sgt William Ehlers Sent to Philippine Hospital for Knee Bullet

Sgt William Ehlers of the 37th Infantry Division was wounded on February 10 in the Philippines and later rejoined his unit. He underwent surgery to remove a bullet from his knee and his entire leg was placed in a cast. His wife Lorraine Altringer of Riverdale was notified. Sgt Thiers, also wounded on Bougainville, is mentioned in connection with his service.

The new mobile unit of The Tuberculosis Institute of Chicago and Cook County will be at Lincoln School all day Friday May 25 for chest X rays. All X rays are free and open to all residents.

In a May 4 letter to his wife Helen S/Sgt Carl W Krueger recalls being captured on April 29 after an attack. He describes days of movement and confinement, sardine rations, and a rescue by Italian partisans before a U S division unit freed them. He notes his family ties to Dalton and Prairie Ave.

Two Survivors Return From Okinawa Sinks

Rodger Rost Sr son of Riverdale returns on 30 day leave from San Francisco after serving nine months aboard the Calhoun sunk April 6 off Okinawa. His brother Tom, a Merchant Marine cadet, learned Rodger was in the city but could not meet him. Orland F. David, husband of Dorothy Gruhlke, arrives on 80 day leave after serving aboard a landing craft sunk off Okinawa.

Sgt. John W. Owen, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Burch of 14426 Chicago Street Dalton, freed by British troops in Germany on April 28, reports he is well and safe. He promises to write soon and hopes to be home shortly.

Earl Wise Awarded Bronze Star Medal

Pvt. Earl Wise of Dalton is awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement on Leyte October 20 21 1944. He protected a 95 pound radio under mortar and sniper fire and transmitted orders during a mortar barrage aiding the infantry journey.

Indoor Carnival Planned at Riverdale Youth Center

The Youth Center at 64 East 138th Street Riverdale hosts an indoor carnival on May 25 from 7 p.m. to midnight with admission twelve cents and a door prize of a 25 War Bond. Attendees are asked to donate odds and ends such as junk jewelry and old dishes to the White Elephant booth.

Former Dolton Man Dies at Wife's Funeral

Nick Meyer a native and former Dolton resident died from a heater attack at his wife’s funeral in Seattle Washington where the family had lived for about two weeks. He had moved to Seattle five years ago to work in a war industry. The Meyers previously lived on a farm in Huron South Dakota. He is survived by twelve children.

Three Here Home from Long Overseas Service

Three local servicemen returned to their homes on furlough after months of overseas duty. Ensign Warren Claussen arrived May 7 for a 27 day leave from the South Pacific where he earned five bronze stars aboard a landing craft. T/5 John Cale came home with a 45 day furlough from Belgium and the European Theatre, staying with his parents in Riverdale. S/Sgt. Paul Putnam reached Iv anhoe for a brief stay before a Florida rest trip, after Saipan service and four years with coast artillery in Hawaii.
