Program of Varied Interests Planned for UHS & JC PTA
Thornton Township high school and Junior College PTA meets Tuesday evening May 22 at 8 o clock in the high school auditorium Harvey. An excellent speaker will address active and discharged servicemen and their friends. New officers will be installed. A community singing session led by Walter Armbruster and a marimba solo by William Haase are on the program with colors presented by Riverdale and Dolton Scouts. The Thornioneers provide special music in the cafeteria during the social hour.

Polkow Rites Held For Clara H Polkow In Thornton
Funeral services for Clara H Polkow age 75 were held this afternoon at St Pauls Lutheran Church Thornton. She died Tuesday morning at her daughter Lucilles home 215 Maple Lane Thornton where she had lived four years. Born February 3 1869 in Fillmore Wisconsin she is survived by three daughters Niola Williamson Lucille Bruegmann Lillian Bruegmann and Victor Polkow all of Thornton a sister Ida Bertram Chicago and two brothers Otto Schuster Fillmore and Oscar Schuster Sheboygan Falls Wisconsin Interment followed at Oak Lawn cemetery Bachmann funeral home directed arrangements.

Sgt William Ehlers Sent to Philippine Hospital for Knee Bullet
Sgt William Ehlers of the 37th Infantry Division was wounded on February 10 in the Philippines and later rejoined his unit. He underwent surgery to remove a bullet from his knee and his entire leg was placed in a cast. His wife Lorraine Altringer of Riverdale was notified. Earl Wise Awarded Bronze Star Medal
Pvt. Earl Wise of Dalton is awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement on Leyte October 20 21 1944. He protected a 95 pound radio under mortar and sniper fire and transmitted orders during a mortar barrage aiding the infantry journey.

The Youth Center at 64 East 138th Street Riverdale hosts an indoor carnival on May 25 from 7 p.m. to midnight with admission twelve cents and a door prize of a 25 War Bond. Attendees are asked to donate odds and ends such as junk jewelry and old dishes to the White Elephant booth.

Former Dolton Man Dies at Wife's Funeral
Nick Meyer a native and former Dolton resident died from a heater attack at his wife’s funeral in Seattle Washington where the family had lived for about two weeks. He had moved to Seattle five years ago to work in a war industry. The Meyers previously lived on a farm in Huron South Dakota. He is survived by twelve children.

Three local servicemen returned to their homes on furlough after months of overseas duty. Ensign Warren Claussen arrived May 7 for a 27 day leave from the South Pacific where he earned five bronze stars aboard a landing craft.
