Robbery suspect charged in Wells Fargo bank heist

Marcelino Chalan Jr., 27, of Cochiti Pueblo, was arrested after FBI agents charged him in a July 20 robbery at the Wells Fargo inside the Albertsons on Southern Boulevard in Rio Rancho. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years. The FBI and local police investigated following a tip.

Responders honored first-responder appreciation day event

A public safety appreciation day is planned for Sunday Sept. 27 at Olympus Park on Quantum Road next to the Rio Rancho Police Department. A 7:30 a.m. hot air balloon launch honors slain officer Gregg Nigel Benner. Activities run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with vehicle displays, raffles for the Jen-82 Foundation and opportunities to meet fire and police personnel. Local firefighter and police wives organized the event.

Sandoval County Fire Begins Second Citizen Fire Academy

Sandoval County Fire Department launches an eight week Citizens Fire Academy to educate residents about firefighting and emergency medical services. Free of charge, the program runs Wednesdays from Sept 30 7pm to 9 30pm with a Saturday session Nov 7 9am to 5pm at Fire Station No 21 near Santa Ana Star Casino.

Rio Rancho Utilities Commission backs a 25 million bond to replace a 47 year old sewer plant on Sara Road. The decision now moves to the governing body for final approval at a Wednesday City Hall meeting.

Rio Rancho High School baseball players Jared Bock Noah Montano and David Sanchez visited Shining Stars Preschool to mentor students while head coach Ron Murphy and teacher Tania Vigil described the event as helping kids open up and learn baseball terms such as cleats mitts and seams.

County moves to consolidate court facilities in Bernalillo

Sandoval County Commission advances plan to relocate the magistrate court to the county judicial complex north of Walmart in Bernalillo. A loan proposal up to 5 million dollars to modify the complex has unanimous support, with banks to fund and the county to own the project. The plan faces questions about state obligations and previously rejected 8 million bond expansion.

Sandoval County adopts Class A investment policy amid treasurer clash

The Sandoval County Commission unanimously passed a new investment policy and ratified investments from October 2009 through January 2014 as part of a switch to Class A status. County Treasurer Laura Montoya opposed the move, claiming she was not consulted and seeking Attorney General guidance ontreasurer versus commission authority.

Teen self harm attempts drop cites New Mexico health report

Cleveland High School teacher Lloyd Spotted Wolf welcomed a New Mexico Department of Health report showing teen death by own action attempts fell from 14.5 percent in 2003 to 9.4 percent in 2013. The DoH credited parents health professionals and teachers for recognizing warning signs like low mood and substance abuse. Spotted Wolf noted his 2012 Jason Foundation event aimed to save lives in Rio Rancho and called the decline meaningful.
