Take-Back Event for Unwanted Prescriptions in Rio Rancho

RAPD and DEA collect unwanted prescription drugs for destruction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Rio Rancho Police Department lobby at 500 Quantum Road. Enter through west doors near flag poles. Service is free and anonymous with officers collecting the meds. The program aims to reduce pill abuse and theft from home cabinets where drugs can be diverted or abused.

Truck drives into Rio Rancho salon injuring driver

A driver at Style America on NM 528 near Southern Boulevard crashed through the glass front after stepping on the gas instead of the brake. The woman in her mid-60s was treated for minor injuries, no one else hurt, responders evacuated the shop and adjacent NM Gas office, and the truck was removed.

Boy's brave response to severe gate accident in Rio Rancho

Seven year old Jack Poccia suffered a broken nose and compound fractures in both bones of his lower left leg when a heavy gate fell on him. Firefighters and medics stabilized his spine, treated pain, and commended the calm, protective action of his father during the rescue.

Night Under the Stars Opens Open Air Planetarium

Rio Rancho hosts the fifth annual Night Under the Stars fundraiser to support the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society. More than 50 residents attended at Rainbow Park Observatory with 501st Legion photo ops, silent auction, and Papa Murphy's pizza. Dr. Robert Fugate of New Mexico Tech spoke as funds go toward maintaining telescopes and equipment. a red ribbon cut inaugurated the open air planetarium featuring a circle of 12 benches.
