Sandoval County Commission weighs 15 percent pay raise request

The Sandoval Law Enforcement Association urged a 15 percent pay increase for the sheriff department's 13 officers at the Sandoval County Commission meeting. Deputy Sandy Kimura noted officers earn less than county maintenance staff and that low pay drives turnover, with several working overtime without pay to cover county areas. Commissioner Salazar suggested 20 percent plus efforts to cut crime, as patrols are thin. The panel paused hearings, with budget proposals due June 15 in Santa Fe, and set June 3 to reconvene. Also approved were abandoning a public road in Corrales and dedicating a Casas De Tierra maintenance road.
