City Restricts Moduler Homes in Single Family Zones

City planners redefine modular housing per state law to keep modular units out of multi family areas. In 1986, Pete Scaltrito and Cindy Duran moved a portable unit to 1709 33rd St with staff approval, later withdrawn amid protests. Planning commission and city council denied staying, now the city seeks settlement out of court. Rosary Society meets plans pancake breakfast June 7 and pot luck June 9 with call to participate.

JWV Auxiliary Tours New Futures School in Albuquerque

JWV auxiliary visited the New Futures school on May 13 in Albuquerque. Principal Caroline Gaston guided a tour of the mixed middle and high school for teen parents, highlighting donated items and the school’s national recognition.

Virginia Piampiano thanks a young couple named Perry and Debbie and a DPS officer for aiding her car breakdown on Southern Boulevard. They towed her car to The Fairways and helped collect parts. Steve Shaw of DPS assisted. The couple plans to move to Washington state.

Crash stats and crime notes from the department

The Ion Department released April and year to date fatal crash statistics: 33 crashes in April causing 38 deaths, 119 fatal crashes and 138 fatalities year to date. Child restraint failures involved six under eleven. Fatalities by mode include 138 in vehicles, 23 pedestrians, seven motorcyclists, one bicyclist. A string of break ins across several businesses is suspected to be the work of the same group, with Crime Stoppers offering up to 1000 dollars for information. PTA officers and school announcements follow, naming new officers for Puesta Del Sol for 1987 88 and thanking supporters.

Memorial Day Closures Across Rio Rancho Officials

State city and county offices shut Monday May 25 for Memorial Day. Rio Rancho banks closed and Consolidated Services Industries pickup unavailable. Meadowlark Senior Center closes Friday May 29. Rio Rancho Observer offices stay open 8 am to 5 pm on both days.

Summer recreation program for ages 10 16 at UNM

The National Youth Sports Council offers a free summer program for boys and girls ages 10 to 16 at Johnson Gym from June 15 to July 17. Buses from Corrales area leave at 7 45 am to four pick up points with a daily 1 15 pm dismissal and free lunch. Applications due May 27 at Corrales Elementary or Village office. valid physicals offered free at UNM June 12 for girls and June 13 for boys. Deb Toya at 898 9038 for more information.
