Rio Rancho district earns national nod for Native American outreach

Rio Rancho Public Schools named a District of Distinction for the American Indian Summer Academy a two week program blending math science and technology with native culture. The district collaborates with Notah Begay II Foundation to teach healthy living and hosts a spring Pow Wow drawing up to a thousand people. Native students outperform peers statewide with 2014 graduation at 80.6 percent and higher reading and math proficiency. District executive director Victoria Tafoya emphasizes parent involvement and ongoing culturally relevant education.

Miss Indian World 32nd annual Gathering of Nations opens applications

The 2015 Miss Indian World contest seeks Native American women ages 18 to 25 who are single with no children and know tribal traditions. Winners become cultural goodwill ambassadors for one year. Applicants must submit essays, two letters of recommendation, a photo, and proof of tribal affiliation by March 20.

Marine with Silver Star dies in Florida helicopter crash

Staff Sergeant Andrew Seif, 27, a critical skills operator with the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion based at Camp Lejeune, died when a UH-60 Black Hawk crashed off the Florida Panhandle during a training mission. He earned a Silver Star for heroism in Afghanistan in 2012. His father and stepmother live in Rio Rancho. Seif joined the Marines in 2006 and was named USO Marine of the Year in 2013.
