Williams crowned Mid-South Wrestler of the Week after NAIA qualifier

Cumberland's Jake Williams, top seed at 149, went 2-0 in Fort Wayne earning Wrestler of the Tournament honors and advancing to his fourth straight NAIA national championships. The Rio Rancho native defeated Brody McGrath 20-5 and Dallas Brown 18-7 before pinning Isaac Thomas in the final. Williams, a three-time All American, has a 21-2 spring record and will compete in Topeka March 6-7 with five teammates.

Fourth Rio Rancho Rockets bowl-a-thon fundraiser set

The fourth annual Rio Rancho Rockets Special Olympians bowl-a-thon is set for Saturday April 11 at Starlight Lanes Santa Ana Star Casino. Entry is 25 per bowler including three games and shoes with four bowlers per team. A 9-pin no-tap format applies rolling a9 on a first ball counts as a strike. Awards for top scores at 10 am and 1 pm plus raffle and silent auction. Registration closes April 4 call 573 8046 for info.

Snow postpones District 1-6A hoops

Rio Rancho High School and Cleveland High in Albuquerque delayed 1-6A semifinals and the district final due to inclem ent weather. The Rams and Storm will now pursue a Tuesday 7:30 p.m. title game and Monday brackets, with state tournament seeds released later.

Longtime wrestling referee Davidson retires

Rusty Davidson, a longtime referee who coached or refereed every high school state champion since 1976, retires after a 20th state title run with Rio Rancho High. He plans to continue national officiating and will mentor New Mexico wrestling, leaving his shoes on the mat as a symbol of his farewell.

Storms Beat Rams In Last-Second RAC Showdown

In a tight RAC clash Storm defeat Rams 40-38 after Jade Hill's late layup and Audri Chavez's free throws, overcoming a 34-28 Rams lead and coughing up a late three-point attempt. Hill finished with 12 points, Chavez 10, Morlock and Pribble added 11 and 8 respectively as Cleveland ends district play with 9-19.
