Martyr Friar Rodriguez Led Early New Mexico Mission
Franciscan Friar Agustin Rodriguez led a 1581 northern expedition from Santa Barbara into Pueblo country near Taos and Bernalillo. Joined by Lopez and Santa Maria with Chamuscado’s detachment, they faced fierce resistance, deaths, and eventual martyrdom. The rescue expedition to recover the missing friars arrived too late.
