The Rio Rancho Knights of Columbus challenge local businesses to donate toward a protective vest for DPS second police dog Cita, now in training. DPS recently outfitted Hero and seeks another vest. information at 896-6816. It’s described as a neighborhood yard sale on steroids.
Plans announced to widen NM 44 from Bernalillo to the Four Corners to four lanes this decade. The project aims to improve safety and boost New Mexico's economy by strengthening transport between central and northwest regions.
Special Commissioner Nancy Colella dismissed the competing restraining order claims between Kevin Jackson and Tony Oliva, saying the matter does not fit the Family Violence Protection Act and belongs in another court. Both sides signaled no further immediate action though spada gag orders and discovery disputes had marked the case.
Rio Rancho officials plan a months long effort from July through March to appoint a successor to former mayor Kevin Jackson following his resignation amid allegations. Councilor Mike Williams said the departure offers closure and a path to move forward as Delma Petrullo and Howard Balmer praised his decision as in the city’s best interests.
The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education gave a first reading to Policy 304 requiring consent for a new random drug testing program for middle and high school athletes and extracurricular participants. Two parents spoke, voicing concerns about proof of effectiveness, randomness, and potential profiling, while RRHS athletic director Andy Sweet explained policy highlights as he announced his resignation to become Goddard High principal.
Jim Blaszkowski helped start a recall push aimed at forcing Mayor Kevin Jackson from office. He says the resignation was the goal all along and apologizes for the city’s soap opera while noting the group’s broader concern over Chamisa Hills ponds. The Advocates for Wildlife and the Environment led the effort.
