From the Aug 7 1985 Observer edition, St Joseph West Mesa Hospital celebrates its one year in business with a July 30 1985 anniversary party where 200 staff helped barbecue. The week saw a record 46 patients, the highest since opening at the 128 bed facility.
The New Mexico Public Education Department issued changes making classroom observations the main part of teacher evaluations for subjects lacking standardized tests or end of course exams. Testing data can be used but not exceed 25 percent, and will not determine first year teacher grades. Education Secretary Hanna Skandera said the move follows district feedback amid concerns of fairness and equity for teachers whose courses lack tests.
School district officials reported seven vacant teaching positions at the start of 2010-11, rising to 18 last year. Growth in enrollment may require two more teachers at Ernest Stapleton Elementary and one at Colinas del Norte and Maggie Cordova. MLK and Rio Rancho Elementary face growth, with MLK potentially adding 50 students and Rio Rancho 30, while districts stress more state funding over long term substitutes.
The PED reform affects about 1,800 first year teachers by basing evaluations on classroom observations attendance and other feedback with no prior year student achievement. Local districts decide on including achievement measures for around 1,000 educators in non tested grades with a 25 percent cap. For teachers in tested classes 50 percent of evaluations remain student test scores.
