Disabled Will Receive S. S. Checks in August

More than one hundred thousand severely disabled people nationwide will get their first social security disability insurance checks in August. John R. Goldman, district manager of the Sioux City Iowa office, said many eligible workers ages 50 to 65 have not applied. Those disabled long enough must apply by June 30 or lose rights to new benefits. People 50 to 65 may have their records frozen to protect future disability and survivor benefits. Goldman explained the disability criteria, relying on medical evidence and legal standards for substantial gainful activity.

Iowa State College economist Francis A. Kutish notes farm labor has grown faster than other costs, prompting farmers to substitute inputs, farm more acres, and possibly lower yields per acre. USDA data show farms tripling purchases of feed and fuel since 1935-39, helping double output while hired labor fell 55 percent.
