Boyden Softball Team Opens Season With Widening Wins

The Boyden softball team opened their season with three wins over George 9 to 3 Sheldon 16 to 5 and Carmel. A home game against the Sioux Center Indians is set for Tuesday night June 11. The club will debut new uniforms funded by the Co-ops.

Boonstra Sells Orange City Grocery to Local Buyer

Bob Boonstra of Orange City has sold his grocery store Bob's Market to Gary Kroeze of Orange City. Kroeze will lease the building and take possession on Saturday. Boonstra has spent decades in the grocery business with fifty years in the current building. future plans are not announced.

Ill and recovering residents return home from Sioux City hospitals

Mrs. Gerhard Scholten came home last week after observation at Sheldon hospital and feels much better. Mrs. Martha Heitritter had eye surgery at St Vincent's in Sioux City last week. Henry Bosman returned home Saturday from St Joseph's in Sioux City after over three weeks hospitalization and will be under doctors care for months.

Meeting Set for June 7 of Northwest Association for Retarded Children

The Northwest Association for Retarded Children schedules a Friday meeting June 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Sheldon public school's home economics department. Delegates will report on the June 1 2 state convention in Marshalltown Iowa. Officers will be elected for July. Over 100 adults and about 40 children attended the last meeting in Sheldon high school auditorium.

Smit 50th Anniversary Celebrated at Home

Mr and Mrs Ralph Ring Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday June 2 at home with a family dinner. The couple married May 29 1907 near Boyden and ran the Smit Meat Market before Ring remained semi retired but partnered in Smit and Son Packing Co. They have three children Joe Fuhr Raymond Smit and Anthony Smit and seven grandchildren.

Robert Struyk, son of Mr and Mrs Anne Struyk of Boyden, earned a Masters degree in English with high honors from Columbia University New York last week after a diverse college career. Marvin Bomgaars, son of Mr and Mrs Arie Bomgaars, earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of South Dakota Vermillion with commencement last week and will begin work as an IRS accountant in Des Moines June 17.

Service member Merle Den Herder arrived at his mother Minnie Den Herder’s home last Monday and received honorable discharge after four years in the Navy. He served primarily as a cook aboard the ship Badoeng Strait and now intends to apply his navy baking skills to civilian life.

The May 8 meeting opened with the pledge and roll call. Plans for Rally Day were made with Ruth Jacobsma Nelva Moret and Mrs Doorenbos driving. Citizens of Boyden enjoyed unlimited water over the weekend as the Water Tower Painting Co. of Clear Lake cleaned and painted the interior of the tanks and touched up the exterior. The entire roof also received a coat of red paint.

About 70 farmers and commission men attended the Sioux County Beef Tour last week.
