The Boyden softball team opened their season with three wins over George 9 to 3 Sheldon 16 to 5 and Carmel. A home game against the Sioux Center Indians is set for Tuesday night June 11. The club will debut new uniforms funded by the Co-ops.
Eleanor Kroon received multiple bridal showers hosted by Orange City hosts with luncheon and games. Guests from Hull Hospers Alton and Sioux Center attended, along with relatives and friends from nearby towns.
Bob Boonstra of Orange City has sold his grocery store Bob's Market to Gary Kroeze of Orange City. Kroeze will lease the building and take possession on Saturday. Boonstra has spent decades in the grocery business with fifty years in the current building. future plans are not announced.
Mrs. Gerhard Scholten came home last week after observation at Sheldon hospital and feels much better. Mrs. Martha Heitritter had eye surgery at St Vincent's in Sioux City last week. Henry Bosman returned home Saturday from St Joseph's in Sioux City after over three weeks hospitalization and will be under doctors care for months.
The Northwest Association for Retarded Children schedules a Friday meeting June 7 at 8:00 p.m. in Sheldon public school's home economics department. Delegates will report on the June 1 2 state convention in Marshalltown Iowa. Officers will be elected for July. Over 100 adults and about 40 children attended the last meeting in Sheldon high school auditorium.
Mr and Mrs Gerrit Kroon announce the marriage of Eleanor Kroon to David Kammina on Thursday June 6 at 7 30 pm at the First Reformed Church of Boyden with the public invited. Mr and Mrs John Dekkinga announce the marriage of Anna Dekinga to Marvin Bomgaars on Thursday June 6 at 7 30 pm at the Matlock Reformed Church with the public invited.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Ring Smith celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sunday June 2 at home with a family dinner. The couple married May 29 1907 near Boyden and ran the Smit Meat Market before Ring remained semi retired but partnered in Smit and Son Packing Co. They have three children Joe Fuhr Raymond Smit and Anthony Smit and seven grandchildren.
Robert Struyk, son of Mr and Mrs Anne Struyk of Boyden, earned a Masters degree in English with high honors from Columbia University New York last week after a diverse college career. Marvin Bomgaars, son of Mr and Mrs Arie Bomgaars, earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting from the University of South Dakota Vermillion with commencement last week and will begin work as an IRS accountant in Des Moines June 17.
Mr and Mrs Hérman Ruyter of Sioux Falls announce the birth of a daughter named Jane Ann born Thursday May 23. She has two brothers. grandmother is Mrs Kathryn Ruyter of Boyden.
Mrs. Gerrit Slothouber entertained Wednesday evening May 29 honoring her husband on his birthday. Present were Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Slothouber and sons Mr. and Mrs. Case Slothouber and family and Mr. and Mrs. Tony Slothouber and children.
Piano teachers within 100 miles of Le Mars Iowa receive notices for a June 10 workshop. Hosted by Westmar College with the Sioux City Piano Teachers Association, the all day event at Westmar College Chapel features six sessions for private teachers. Dr Robert Larson of Morningside College will speak at luncheon.
The boys' 4-H Livestock Growers gathered Monday at Case Slothouber's home for a club tour led by Paul M. Vande Hoef and assistant Case Slothouber, followed by a weiner roast at the Slothouber residence.
Service member Merle Den Herder arrived at his mother Minnie Den Herder’s home last Monday and received honorable discharge after four years in the Navy. He served primarily as a cook aboard the ship Badoeng Strait and now intends to apply his navy baking skills to civilian life.

Northwestern College reveals an expanded instructional staff for the 1957 58 academic year under president Dr Preston Stegenga. Rev Henri Steunenberg of Boyden will join as part time faculty in sociology and Bible studies, bringing a background that includes Hope College Central College Western Theological Seminary and an MA in sociology from the University of Rochester.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Rensink attended the University of Dubuque graduation Sunday where their son in law Frank Elliott graduated from the Theological Seminary. They also attended ordination at Wilson Chapel Ottumwa as he joins the Presbyterian ministry and will be installed June 6 as pastor of Beulah Presbyterian Church Orion Illinois.
Citizens of Boyden enjoyed unlimited water over the weekend as the Water Tower Painting Co. of Clear Lake cleaned and painted the interior of the tanks and touched up the exterior. The entire roof also received a coat of red paint.
About 70 farmers and commission men attended the Sioux County Beef Tour last week. County Extension Director Maur ice Eldridge and ISU Extension Animal Husbandman Bill Zmolek led discussions on feeding and market outlook with comments from commission representatives. Stops included Elmer Den Herder Neal Van Beek Irwin Vermeer Bernard Vermeer Harold Vermeer Glenn Schut and Peter Schut. Two 4 H club calves were weighed at Neal Van Beek’s.
