Long Hair Composer of Swing Hit By Violinist Heifetz
A nascent collaboration reveals violinist Jascha Heifetz as the composer of the music for the popular song When You Make Love to Me, published in June and credited to Jim Hoy and lyricist Marjorie Goethius. Recording firms and artists, including Bing Crosby, were unaware of the composer’s identity until a dare spurred the pairing. In a public exchange at Central Street, Goethius challenged Heifetz to set her words to his music, leading to the surprising credit.
