Explorer Seeks Radiation Data In Yoyo Orbit
CAPE CANAVERAL UPI An explorer satellite weighing 89 pounds circled Earth on a mission to study space radiation that threatens future manned lunar flights. Launched Tuesday night aboard a Delta rocket, the moonlet aims for a wide yoyo orbit 185 to 53,000 miles from Earth, completing a 31-hour loop while measuring natural Van Allen belts and a bomb-derived belt from a 1.4 megaton detonation near Johnston Island. NASA Chief Robert Gray confirmed normal rocket performance and anticipated orbital details in days ahead. The mission follows reports that man-made radiation damaged several satellites and secret U.S. military devices.
