Space officials gave Walter M. Schirra Jr. the green light to attempt a full six orbits aboard Sigma 7 after his fifth orbit. He drifted to conserve fuel, reported comfortable temperature, and noted sunlit and nightside conditions, including sightings of what observers call the Glenn effect.
Walter M. Schirra Jr. piloted Sigma 7 on a planned six orbit mission expected to cover about 160000 miles in roughly 9 hours 11 minutes. The 39 year old Navy commander launched at 8 15 a m EDT with the world watching as he demonstrated smooth automated flight and timed orbits, aiming to beat prior US orbital records and set groundwork for longer future missions.
Walter M. Schirra Jr. became the highest flying American with Sigma 7 on its first orbit reaching 176 miles above Earth. The previous U S mark was 167 miles by M Scott Carpenter on his three orbit flight May 24. Yuri Gagarin still holds the world altitude record at 187.75 miles on his single orbit.
Cape Canaveral reports the challenge of placing a man in orbit requires precise aim and speed. The target bullseye sits about 100 miles high and 500 miles downrange, over Bermuda, with a required 1700 feet center accuracy and 17500 mph booster velocity at target. U S Steel challenged the move first with other big producers studying the impact and expected to follow. Leslie B Worthington said U S Steel would revise its prices to stay competitive as Inland Steel and Republic Steel also weigh Kaiser's shift.

The murder trial of a 28 year old Wyoming County father, Howard Atwell Fannock, opened in Wyoming County Circuit Court with life imprisonment sought. He is accused of fatally beating his two year old son, Timothy, on May 20. The trial heard testimony from the mother and coroner Dr. Ned C. Rogers, and showed 10 photographs of the child before embalming as state exhibits.
An explosion at a Manhattan telephone company building shortly after noon left at least 20 dead and about 50 injured. Authorities believe a heating device detonated, with many believed trapped inside the upper Manhattan structure.

Beckley streets were nearly empty as the Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi raised 6.37 for the county Centennial Fund at a Neville Street booth. Gulf Woman's Club added 52.90, bringing total to 59.27. A second booth at Main Street was to open at noon with volunteers on duty 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the other site. Loud speakers, loaned by the Salvation Army, will soon equip both booths per Mrs. George T. Lowry.
