Minor Changes In Employment
The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reports signs of improvement in employment conditions in its fifth district but says no material changes occurred in April and early May. Building permits rose seasonally, farm work provided rural jobs, and department store sales are up nearly 21 percent from last April. Banking showed lower rediscounts, more industrial loans, higher bank reserves, and increases in deposits and cash in vaults.
