Reported contact with George Weyerhaeuser kidnappers and a $200000 ransom in a secret hiding place sparked belief the nine year old lumber heir would be released soon. Family go-betweens named. tension eased among authorities amid unconfirmed tips.
Tommy Perdue twenty year old coal loader was killed instantly by a slate fall in the Francis mine of the E C Minter Coal company at 11:00 yesterday morning. Walter Church thirty five of Frances and G E Davis of Frances were injured. Church rescued by Davis after a second fall. Funeral plans for Perdue pending.
In the $25,000 damage suit A R Allen Glen Rogers timberman vs Raleigh Wyoming Mining Co. evidence closed yesterday afternoon. The jury is excused until tomorrow morning for arguments and instructions after a recess for a national holiday. Allen alleges negligence for not informing him of replacing a canvas fly with a wooden door, which he says caused crushing injuries when a mine car struck the door. Company attorneys contend Allen was warned of the change.
The United States marked a day of tribute to fallen soldiers with nationwide pageants and ceremonies. Veterans from Civil War to World War II era led parades while President Roosevelt attended events in Washington. Arlington National Cemetery and the Badger docked for shipboard services at Old Glory post.
Washington May 30 farm program leaders moved to shield the AAA from a fate similar to the NRA. Agriculture Secretary Wallace and others reviewed the Supreme Court NRA decision to gauge its impact on the AAA. Officials cautioned changes in pending amendments might be needed to close legal loopholes and defects, with months likely before a crisis. AAA records show 59 open court cases challenging aspects of the act.
Four Raleigh and Fayette residents will graduate at Duke University in Durham on Monday. Local graduates include Robert Boyd Jr N J Rahall and Ruth Wray all earning Bachelor of Arts degrees. Oak Hill resident R R Thomas to receive a Bachelor of Science in engineering, while Vera Virginia Thomas to receive a graduate nurse diploma.
Funeral services for Silas T. Lilly age 48 of Odd will be at Lyons cemetery Camp Creek tomorrow at 2 30 pm with Reverend Steve Wood Beckley burial under Foster undertakers Lilly died after two weeks illness in a local hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday He is survived by his widow and children James Hazel Ida Eugene Cyril Irene Roy Dallas and Georgia Mae Lilly all at home Two sisters Mrs S E Thompson of Rock and Mrs D L Shrewsberry of Beeson.
London telegraph dispatches report a new quake on Formosa, similar in intensity to April’s deadly event. Inhabitants engaged in reconstruction fled as panic spread, with seismologists calling it a sequel to April’s quake now that the ground has settled. heavy casualties were not expected.
The American Legion marked the graves of its dead on Memorial Day. A Raleigh county post committee visited Wildwood cemetery placing poppy and holly wreaths and an American flag on each grave and crosses on seven unmarked ones. Local businesses and offices largely closed for the day. Commander W. R. Fugitt lamented the lack of a comprehensive veterans’ grave registry.
Tegucigalpa May 30 Six persons two of them children were killed yesterday when a passenger airplane crashed into the Ulua river near Santa Barbara Three others were seriously injured All the victims were natives of Honduras except the pilot Ernest Voss a German American whose home residence was believed to be San Francisco California.
President Roosevelt, using a nationwide telephone address, opened the California Pacific International Exposition in San Diego. He expressed confidence in prospects despite NRA upheaval, saying progress has been made and government is energized toward the public good.
Mt. Pleasant Mich May 30 Two men died early today and another was believed dying from injuries after a gas-well fire trapped nine men working on a derrick in a central Michigan oil field last night. The dead are William Williamson 55 driller from Sistersville West Virginia Milton Santee about 40 of Cameron West Virginia C. P. Trowbridge 40 of Logan Ohio had a slight chance of recovery He was burned internally from inhaling flames The others are expected to recover.
Weston report says John Baker White treasurer of the state board of control is improved at Weston State Hospital where he has been treated for heart disease since May 17 after falling ill on a Morgantown business trip. Doctors say he remains very ill and not yet able to be up, with an indefinite hospital stay.
Washington May 30 The senate voted to take up the administration bill to abolish unnecessary public utility holding companies despite protests of unconstitutionality. Wheeler (D Mont) defended the measure saying the government has authority to regulate holding companies, while opponents urged recommittal for constitutional study.
Highland Falls New York May 30 two men were lost and eight rescued when the tug Russell II sank after colliding with the Ford Motor company motor ship Chester in the Hudson river. The lost men were Thomas Moran 38 and Siver Anderson 35 of New York City. They were sleeping and believed trapped. The eight others were thrown into the water and rescued by a lifeboat from the Chester.
Washington May 30 strike orders for 450000 soft coal miners were being prepared as United Mine Workers and many operators argued Congress could avert a walkout by swiftly authorizing a little N R A for the industry. John L. Lewis said strikes would begin if wage agreements are not signed by June 16, unless the Guffey coal stabilization bill is enacted to secure wage payments. Operators favoring the Guffey bill push amendments to remove federal land purchase and production allocation, align with Supreme Court N R A ruling, and allow district cost leasing.
A three story lodging house in downtown Detroit was destroyed by fire in the early hours. A janitor named Charles Oliver died in the flames while a woman identified as Mrs Tillie Peitz, though rescued alive, died later in hospital. Fourteen others were injured, five seriously.
Marshall College enacts a faculty warning after a student election probe. President Dr. M. P. Shawkey says action must be taken to improve student government or it will be abrogated next year. Edward Green pledges to raise the government standard at Marshall High.
A survey of 1,200 San Jose State College coeds finds none keep a hope chest. The study, conducted in San Jose, California on May 30, shows changing values among today’s girls who no longer prize traditional chests for keepsakes.
Louis A. Johnson, former national commander of the American Legion, urged the United States to remain fully armed and to end disarmament. Speaking at the national cemetery on Memorial Day, he argued for a universal draft to eliminate war profits and warned Congress may soon adopt such an act within a year.
Funeral services for Jefferson Slidell Brown 74 veteran West Virginia editor and political leader will be held at 3 p m today at the Elkins Grace Lutheran church. The body will be moved to Kingwood his native home and burial will be at Kingwood after services at the Presbyterian church. Brown a delegate to the national convention that nominated William Jennings Bryan as Democratic nominee for president died at his home Tuesday night. He was a former state senator and had been editor and publisher of the Randolph Enterprise since 1914. Prior to that he published the West Virginia Argus at Kingwood.
Indianapolis May 30. Clay Weatherly of Cincinnati was killed when his car crashed over the northwest wall during the 500 mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His mechanic Edwin Bradburn of Los Angeles suffered a broken back in the same incident, condition serious. Weatherly had been driving the car that had earlier killed Johnnie Hannon in practice. Rex Mays of Los Angeles led the field at 127.36 mph in qualifying and early on averaged 114.6 for 20 miles as Louis Meyer and Al Gordon trailed. prize money totaled 3100,000 with about 40,000 to the winner. Hearings on a petition of Wheeling area gas consumers for lower rates were continued by the Public Service Commission until Tuesday morning. National Gas company of West Virginia witnesses discussed lease holdings value, with George C. Wittmer of Pittsburgh testifying that the company’s lease holdings and reserves were worth $2,421,381.16 in 1934.
West Virginia will receive 1.5 million dollars in federal funds for general relief in June, announced by state relief administrator William N. Beehler. An additional 20 thousand dollars was allocated for transient bureau work during the month.
