Illinois Seeks Cash For Relief

Springfield, May 22. Illinois lawmakers faced a new relief crisis as 1.2 million unemployed counted on aid, but no funds would arrive until July 1 without a tax bill. The House failed to pass a 1.0 to 0.0 percentage point sales tax increase by an emergency vote, while a Democratic caucus moved to enact it with a 77 vote majority. Food provisions were not secured for the interim. FERA head Harry Hopkins warned no federal grants would come without Illinois meeting a $3 million monthly cost share. Senator James Hamilton Lewis suggested aid would flow once the tax bill passes, regardless of its date. The Illinois Emergency Relief Commission warned it was at the rope’s end as 125,000 Cook County families and 100,000 downstate residents exhausted food orders. Hunger marchers gathered in Springfield as administration leaders planned to push the tax bill through today amid a dramatic session.
