Relief Load In State Reduced In West Virginia
West Virginia relief figures fell sharply in April with a 40 percent drop in the relief load, attributed to improved employment conditions by state relief administrator William N. Beehler. He noted fewer unemployed seek relief as regular work improves, with April households on relief down from two years earlier. Beehler cited shifts in employment over the past decade and said unemployable cases, once handled by counties and cities, are harder to cover due to tax limits. The April relief roll lists 91,259 resident households on relief versus about 150,000 two years ago, and May carries 87,682 forward, a 12.1 percent dip from January. Beehler also announced a three-day training school for county canning directors starting May 27 at Jackson’s Mill to outline the administration’s food conservation program.
