Pre-Judged Protests Over Rail Firemen Job Cuts Split Broth ershoods
CHICAGO UPI A union leader charged that a presidential railroad commission pre judged the drive to cut 45000 locomotive firemen from diesel locomotives and yard engines. H E Gilbert head of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen said the firemen will defend their rights and oppose the proposed changes. He noted the majority report indicated they were marked for elimination before evidence was heard and pledged hard negotiations in 1962 to seek a peaceful settlement. Leaders of BLE and other brotherhoods met in Cleveland to plan a unified response and a March 21 meeting with railroads was set to decide next steps.
