Democrats Seek Substitution On Tax Bill Floor Fight
Democrats aim to substitute their plan during the House floor battle. A combined approach could cut individual taxes while raising some corporate taxes, lowering federal revenue by about 800 million dollars. President Truman proposed a $10 cost of living tax reduction for all taxpayers offset by higher corporate taxes. The Republican bill by Rep Knutson of Minnesota would raise personal exemptions from 500 to 600, apply community property principles nationwide, and cut taxes 30 percent for the lowest brackets to 10 percent for the highest.
