Scientists Aim to Be First in Atomic Research on Mount Evans
Denver reports a mobilized group of top scientists from MIT NYU Cornell Chicago Michigan Puerto Rico Montreal Cal Tech and the University of Denver working atop Mount Evans to study cosmic rays using balloons and high altitude labs. The effort led by Arthur Compton and Joyce Stearns seeks to harness cosmic ray energy, with predictions by Enrico Fermi about surpassing atomic bomb ramping in exploring nuclear power. The project, akin to a Manhattan District scale mobilization, coordinates data from balloon flights, atmospheric measurements, and cross university teams, aiming to unlock fundamental questions about the universe and radiation effects on life and equipment.
