Oak Hill Junior Woman's Club will finance construction of a $125 tennis court at the city playground. A partial payment of 60 cents will be given to the playground director, with the balance due when construction begins. The club also funds the Oak Hill High School band and other charitable efforts.
Miss Clifton Dotson, Fayette County 4-H Club agent, addressed the Kinston Parent-Teacher Association meeting at the school. Discussion covered radio programs, project awards, adult counsel to members, spring round-up judging, charting, summer camps, and blue ribbon club qualifications. Teachers hosted refreshments after the session.

The Associated Press reports Senator O'Mahoney proposes reviving the wartime excess profits tax to offset steel price boosts. Democratic support is pledged by Senator Millikin who calls for careful study. O'Mahoney calls the steel increase indefensible and says it prompts declaring the steel industry a public utility.
Washington reports meat supply fell to the lowest since 1939 as the agriculture department notes declines in cattle calves hogs sheep and poultry on farms during 1947. Despite tighter production, farm value of livestock and poultry on January 1 reached a record 13.451 billion dollars, 12 percent above a year earlier and 9 percent above the 1937-46 average.

The government in Washington pursues Maj. Gen. Bennet E Meyers as the No 2 army air forces purchasing agent faces three criminal charges. He allegedly induced a business associate to lie to Senate investigators about financial deals tied to Aviation Electric Co. Witness Lamarre pleads guilty and later retracts. Meyers, 52, retired, is accused of profiting from the Dayton firm while leading RAF purchases.
Mr and Mrs Earl Lebo and their three children live in two decommissioned street cars bought for 200 dollars each. They trucked them to a Harrisburg lot for 108 dollars. One car serves as a residence with a kerosene stove and coal heat. the other is storage. The Lebos plan to join the cars into a single dwelling.
Everett Carroll of Midway arraigned before Magistrate W H Level and jailed in Fayette County Jail in default of a $20 fine for an assault on Tony Dubosky during a Summerlee bus ride. Carroll said the men were riding together when he struck Dubosky as he got off the bus.
Jess Arnold Wehrle of Charleston has appealed a $25 fine plus costs on a drunken driving charge. Wehrle was arrested by State Police February 16 and appeared before Magistrate George O Mills last night. He posted a $500 appearance bond on the appeal.

Three Wyoming churches Rock Castle Baptist Cook s Chapel Methodist and Coon Fork Church of God hold union services on Rock Castle Creek with the first service Sunday night at Coon Fork. Boyd Tilley led the service. about one hundred attended. Leaders were Rev E J Hill and Rev Garland Phillips. music by Rockview and Keyrock quartets. The March service will be March 28 at Cooks Chapel at 7 pm led by K C Cox. Public invited.
Fayetteville fire crews saved the Nickell store and nearby houses after a six room Nickell residence burned from a gas stove igniting wallpaper. Strong wind and late arrival led to the home’s destruction while saving the store and other structures. Mrs. Nickell escaped with no time to dress as flames spread around 9 pm.
The President sailed south of Haiti to seek calmer waters rather than take the shorter Guantanamo path. He urged civil rights proposals to Congress, praised in the mostly Negro Virgin Islands with a calypso band farewell. Southern Democrats at home pushed countermeasures to his civil rights program.
The cabinet member said his program embraces cooperation between the United States and Soviet Russia. He argued such ties would promote peace and friendly relations and end the policy of cold war and atomic war tomorrow. He also criticized Russia for withdrawing from conferences on the Marshall Plan.
A thief broke into Geigers Upholstery and Cabinet company at Sprague between 6 a.m. yesterday and 8 a.m. today and stole a radio used in the office. H. D. Geiger reported to city police this morning. The radio was the only article missing as files and desks were ransacked. Entry was gained through the front door with hammer blows and a jimmy. The front door was ajar and the back door open when Geiger arrived. Police are investigating, Capt. Millard Tyree stated.
H B Thomas county agricultural agent reports crowds overflowing the smaller quarters with widespread turnout. He notes it is the largest farmer gathering this winter in Raleigh County. Speakers include C F Bishop and Reetees Kemper of the University Agricultural College on pests soil and planting.

Megister State Writer Pineville R D Bailey former state Democratic chairman and governor candidate denies withdrawing from the May 11 primary race with Okey Patteson and James Kay Thomas of Charleston. He calls rumors designed to mislead voters and says he is definitely a candidate, having campaigned in 40 counties and noting Patteson’s claim the field is between himself and Thomas is unfounded.
Mullens Athletic Association president E. E. Lampton travels to Huntington to deliver approved annexed gym plans for Mullens High School. Frampton and Bower, Huntington architects, receive plans after last night’s high school meeting where changes were proposed to extend the building 20 feet and increase seating to about 2,200 to 2,400.
Lorra ine Layton of Minden obtained a warrant for her husband Herbert Layton. He remained jailed from Friday to Monday on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Magistrate W H Level noted Mrs Layton appeared and withdrew the complaint yesterday.
Three school buses will be auctioned off at 1 30 p m today on the front steps of the Raleigh County Court House. Superintendent D W Bryson said two buses accommodate 55 passengers and the third carries 65. They have been replaced by unit vehicles.
Slovak Democratic leaders met late yesterday after delaying all day due to the president's ill health. In Bratislava, Communist Vice Premier Gustave Husak stated he had assumed plenipotentiary powers and ruled the Slovak Democrats were ousted from the national front and relieved of Council of Ministry offices in the semi autonomous state.
