Local Navy Recruiting Station Tops District in Enlistments

The Beckley, West Virginia navy recruiting station led the West Virginia District for the first 150 days of February with 21 new recruits and five ex-servicemen. Chief Watertender T. R. Sherman, in charge, supervised 64 district recruits for the fiscal year, and Edgar Brown Snow Jr became the second Raleigh County youth to join under a high school graduate program. The station will close next Monday for George Washington’s birthday.

Driver Arrested After Long Race Near Whitlesville

Garrett Tabor of near Whitlesville posted a $55 bond pending a city police court appearance tonight on charges of drunken driving and failure to stop after a chase from Beckley to near Glen Willie when he did not heed an officer's signal.

Tony Garvick Held For Grand Larceny

Logan County suspects Tony Garvick is in custody at Raleigh County Jail awaiting a grand larceny hearing. Magistrate G O Mills said Garvick is accused of stealing personal property and a small amount of money totaling 96 50 from Beckley resident John Lonker.

Southern governors plan anti policy protest group forms

Rep Colmer predicts about a dozen will attend as a resolution opposing the President's program is prepared for adoption. The group will work with southern governors, including South Carolina Texas Arkansas Virginia Maryland, while Senator McGrath says he will meet the governors Monday. The President spoke twice last night at different venues critiquing GOP budget cuts.

Cold wave grips the Midwest and East

The weather report shows Pembina North Dakota at 22 below zero the coldest spot, while Alexandria Minnesota is at 14 below and Duluth 12 below. A strong northerly wind pushes much colder air into Ohio New York and Pennsylvania with readings in the mid teens to mid twenties. By Saturday morning temperatures are forecast near zero to five above in parts of New York and Pennsylvania New Jersey and Delaware with higher readings along the mid-Atlantic.

Churches to Open Training School

The Beckley Ministerial Association will host a week long training school at the Methodist Temple with state religious leaders as instructors. Sessions start Sunday at 2 30 p m and run Monday through Friday at 7 30 p m. Courses cover the Bible with Children church beginnings Bible origins and religious education techniques. Registration is free and open to all interested.

Senator McCarthy Pushes Rent Control Amendment

Senator McCarthy plans an amendment to a 14 month rent control bill allowing states to establish their own programs. States would opt out when the governor informs the federal rent administrator that an adequate state law exists.

Divorce Decrees Issued by Circuit Judge in Raleigh County

Eleven divorces were granted Friday by Circuit Judge Ben H. Ashworth with five law orders entered. Custody suits involved Delia Bateman, Earlene Motley, Pauline Spangler, and other petitions. Io Developments In City Robberies

City police reported no new developments in robberies at the Eagles Club on Prince Street and Wash-It-Quick Laundry on Harper Road. Thieves took about $1,009 and three quarts of whiskey from the Eagles Club by an unlocked window and safe. a canvas bag and a broken lock were found. At the laundry a heavy safe was stolen on December 20, containing records and approximately 55 cents. the safe was later found near the forest fire tower on Tams Mountain.
