Dairymen Can Build Gown Gutter Cleaners at Low Cost
Dr. P. Y. Brown of West Virginia University argues dairy farmers can self construct gutter cleaners using stock items from implement firms. The university model at Dacy Farm runs belt type cleaners from old conveyor belting with canvas backing, costing about 1.25 dollars per foot, improving labor efficiency with faster cleaning times and electric options. Some 6,000 electric units have been installed since the 1920s, reflecting rapid growth in labor-saving dairy equipment.

Antibiotics May Be New Canning Aid
Antibiotics may revolutionize food preservation by enabling sterilization at lower heat. Early results from the U S Department of Agriculture and Western Regional Research Laboratory show canned vegetables treated with minute antibiotic quantities achieve similar spoilage destruction as conventional methods, often with faster canning and less equipment, using subflin produced by common bacteria.

Livestock Production to Expand Amid Shifting Crops Outlook
January issue of Successful Farming forecasts expansion in livestock production and a decline in crop output this year as government price supports ease after March 31. Market prices for farm products should stay near support levels while cash receipts dip about 10 percent in 1950. Acreage allotments apply to basic crops including wheat corn cotton tobacco rice and peas with non basic crops also capped. Hog weights expected to be unusually heavy through March raising discounts later in the season. Potato demand declines with per person consumption near 109 pounds in 1959 and national potato allotment set at 393 million bushels, 50 million below 1949. Morgantown event notes and an unusual egg laid in Union complete the report.

Strip Cropping as a Profitable Spring and Fall Practice
Evidence from research and farmer experience shows strip cropping is practicable and profitable. In spring, fields in sod can begin stripping by plowing alternate strips for corn, with wheat planted in fall on some fields. Some farmers seed wheat across the entire corn field and sow clover and grass in alternating strips in spring. More study is needed to realize full potential, but strip cropping already benefits hillside land previously unprofitable.
