Winona Elementary second graders MacArthur Shaffner Shirley Choice Ralph Agee Loretta Choice Ella Stewart and Abraham Shepherd staged a reading demonstration for upper elementary teachers from nearby districts at DuBois Elementary in Mount Hope. Shaffner posted perfect attendance for 1948-49 while teacher V De Huteke formerly taught in Greenbrier and Nuttallburg before joining Winona faculty.

Oak Hill Armory Sites to be Toured Today by Governor and General
Oak Hill officials announce a 2:30 p.m. tour of three proposed armory sites the Riner farm Thompson’s stables and the South Hill addition if Pea Ridge Main Street valley site fails. Governor Okey J. Patteson and General Charles Fox will inspect with city police escort and may secure city title and a joint use agreement with the Recreation Committee. Local Jaycees will provide cars and civic groups will greet the officials.

Oak Hill High School bands and glee club will be guests at a concert presented by the Emco Chorus on Tuesday March 14 in Oak Hill. The chorus directed by Clarence Beale of West Virginia Tech is made up of Electro Metallurgical Division employees of Carbide and Carbon Corp and was formed as an Emco recreation project. The Oak Hill Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event with John Donachy as its president.

DuBois High School French class plans two one act plays on February 21 during general assembly. The comedy Les Femmes Parlent Trop features Annie Thomas and James Banks as Manon Bonnet and George Bonnet with a large student cast and music by many. The Thirsts plot centers on a novelist and a vacationing wife with a supporting cast including Juanita Ware and Raymond Smithers and songs by Betsy Branch, Basil Brown, and others.

Kopperston Man Faces Hearing on Knifing Count
OCEANA Richard Tiner of Kopperston is to appear before Magistrate Rcy Aliff Monday for a hearing on a knifing charge. The incident occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday in front of Sylvia's Inn, Kopperston, injuring James Ruth, clerk of the Lynco store for Crozier Coal Co. Ruth was treated at Dr. Glen Cobb’s office with stitches to the left ear. Investigators say the feud between the two men in their early 20s sparked the altercation. Finer formerly worked at Lynne and lives near Ruth in Lillyhaven.

Mullens Man Killed as Pole Falls Near Whitesville
Williard Lester, 30, of Hill, an engineer for West Virginia Engineering Co., was killed when a pole gave way during replacement work six miles from Whitesville in Boone County. Foreman Johnny Rinehart said Lester fell about 12 feet, had climbed the pole earlier to remove wires, and died from chest injuries after an hour of artificial respiration. Survived by wife Marie Ballengee Lester, infant son Willard Lee Lester Jr, another son Carlos, father R. B. Lester, mother Martha Lester, a brother Lowell, and three sisters. Body returned to Robertson and Foglesong Funeral Home in Mullens pending arrangements.

Mullens Church Marks First Anniversary Expansion Plans
Mullens First Christian Church marked its first anniversary on February 20 1949 with an anniversary dinner at the home of Mr and Mrs D C Farley. The 23 member congregation has purchased a site on Mullens Hill for a future church and discussed plans to begin construction this spring or summer. The auditorium of Ben Dunman Elementary School has hosted Sunday School and worship services. Members attending included the Farleys Hall Simms and Hall families plus Lou Christian and Edith Cook among others. church officers list D C Farley Walker Hall as elders and deacon class, with Edith Cook secretary and D C Farley treasurer.

Driver Injured When Car Leaves Highway Near Ameagle
Johnny DeHart suffered minor injuries and shock after a car owned by J F Teaford left the road near Ameagle Raleigh County and overturned. The vehicle, a total loss, was driven by DeHart on his first day at a new job with Roberts and Schaffer Construction Company after visiting Jenkins Ky. A prior meeting note mentions a March 14 gathering at the president’s home with Mrs Austin and Mrs Elgin Pruett as co-hostesses.
