Coal burning gas turbine could rival diesels in trains
John F. Yellott, director of research for Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., says coal burning gas turbines offer low cost operation for locomotives. Since 1915 coal fuel costs in the East rose from 12 to about 18 cents per 1,000,000 Btu, while diesel oil climbed from 50 to 69 cents. The turbine may save about 50,000 dollars per locomotive annually at current fuel prices, with fuel cost advantage and long term coal reserves supporting eastern railroad backing for the program.
