Something for Nothing in a McGuffey Tale Teaches Hard Work
The article discusses a McGuffey reader story titled Something for Nothing aimed at sixth graders. It follows Jack who seeks fortune without effort, learns from encounters with a donkey, an apple peddler, and a fiddler that true success comes from work, not magic. The tale underscores that political demagogues prey on the lure of nothing-for-something and urges youth to embrace effort.
