Poultry expert Dr. F. Peterson of the University of Idaho recommends guarding the brooder to guide baby chicks during their first days. Start with mash and fresh water, delay grains for 3 4 weeks, then introduce limited wheat and cracked corn and finally oats to train feeding habits.
