The annual sugar beet growing contest sponsored by the Franklin County Sugar Co honored local 1949 top growers. David Swainston won with 28.42 tons per acre and a net profit of 286.30, earning $25 plus $264.30 in prize and yield credits. Melvin Woodward placed second with 30.75 tons per acre and a profit of 266.45, while Darrell Woodward finished third with near-identical production and labor costs. Swainston attends BYU. Woodwards also farm and keep detailed records and field practices.

Preston high school's play Strange Road by John Houston earned top honors at the district declamation meet in Pocatello held last Friday and Saturday. Directed by Ruth H. Preston to Host Fifth District Music Festival in April
The fifth district music festival will be held in Preston April 21 22 with 22 high schools expected to participate. About 2500 participants will require housing for visiting students the night of April 21 and residents are urged to offer rooms. Public contests at the high school auditorium feature bands orchestras choirs and soloists with first place winners advancing to a state festival in Pocatello.

Easter Egg Hunt Set for April 8 in Franklin County
The annual Easter egg hunt for youngsters will be held April 8 at 2 pm in the city park. Over 1,000 eggs colored by Preston High School home making classes will be hidden with prize numbers. Prizes include a watch, pocket knife, necklace, and an Easter basket. a tiny-children section is set aside for ages up to five.

Wilford Meek son of Mr and Mrs B A Meek of Riverdale was elected president of the Preston Future Farmers of America at the father and son banquet last Thursday evening. He will succeed Darrell Woodward of Franklin who led the chapter this year. Meek has served as FFA secretary in the southeastern district and is a candidate for the state farmer degree to be considered at the Boise convention March 30 31. He is endorsed for the Union Pacific scholarship from Franklin county and is active in vocational agriculture work.
