Basque Sheepherders Return for Annual Boise Ball
Basque herders from Idaho head to Boise for the 19th annual Sheepherders ball on December 27. More than 1,500 Basque descendants expected to attend the clan reunion and festival featuring la jota and the aurresku dances. Zenon Isaguire leads the Basque colony in Boise after John Arch-Jabal’s 1945 death. The Basque community, once from the Pyrenees border area, now dominates Idaho’s sheep industry.

University of Idaho nutritionist T. B. Keith says ewes that lamb in their first year will yield about 15 more pounds of lamb over the next three years. Ewes with twins in the first year may average up to 20 pounds more in that period. A ewe that has and raises a lamb in her first production year is typically a strong lamb producer.
