A county agent report appraises 1948 as a good year for Franklin County farming but not the 1947 jackpot. Precipitation was 16.3 inches vs 21.93 in 1947. ground water was lower due to the longest drought in Weather Bureau history. Milk eggs and canning corn did well. winter wheat income declined with yields down five to ten bushels per acre but remained above average. Poultry and canning corn markets stayed strong. hay yields dropped due to moisture. Farmers are urged to buy hay locally and stock up in advance. (Continued on Page 10)

Body of Pvt Parley Merrill Returned Home
The body of Private Parley Merrill is among 2047 American war dead returned from Europe aboard the Lt James R Robinson. Merrill, son of Mrs. Sarah D. Milkan of Salt Lake, is to arrive in Salt Lake on December 24 with services under Larkin Mortuary. He was brother to Capt. Austin T. Merrill of Preston and Glenn Merrill of Bountiful, a Preston High School graduate with many local friends.

Caldwell executive dies from Payette crash injuries
R C Pasley Sr 67 executive of C C Anderson Stores Co owner of the Preston Golden Rule store died Friday from injuries suffered in a auto crash near Payette last Wednesday. He served as vice president of the Caldwell based firm which runs about 25 clothing food and drugstores in Idaho and Oregon. Survivors include his widow two sons two daughters and multiple siblings.

The Franklin County Livestock Marketing Association sold 4 347 hogs in 1948 totaling 1 083 680 pounds for 255 286 14 dollars at an average 23 55 per hundredweight. The high price was 30 60 for 83 hogs on Aug 19 to Swift and Company Portland and the low the 11 Feb for 151 hogs. Funeral Held Friday For Everett Petterborg
Funeral services were held Friday at the Franklin stake house for Everett C. Petterborg who died Sunday in Los Angeles. Bishop Lyman Purser presided and Van Nelson conducted the services with a six-voice quartet, soloists, prayers, and remarks by local church members.

Mrs. Lucretia Maughan reports strong reception of home demonstration work in Franklin county. In her first full year as home demonstration agent she visited 139 homes, with 1,081 women calling at the courthouse office and 3,819 telephone inquiries for information. Letter in Bottle Cast In Atlantic Arrives in Preston
Mark Jensen son of Mr and Mrs E A Jensen of Preston mailed a note in a bottle while crossing the Atlantic last July en route to Denmark to serve as an LDS missionary. The bottle reached Finland and was forwarded to Miss Rae Dockstader in Preston. Jensen is now in Kolding Denmark and his letters are arriving by normal means. The letter floated about four months with minor moisture damage.
