Ford signs bills to harness solar geothermal energy
President Ford signed bills to expand energy use from solar power and earth heat. The Solar Heating and Cooling Demonstration Act of 1974 creates a testing program with HUD and NASA receiving 5 million this year and 50 million over the next four years. The Geothermal Energy research act creates a government management group to advance geothermal resources. Ford also amended the Youth Conservation Corps Act to widen grants for summer work programs for 15 to 18 year olds in national parks. He voiced concerns about 64 million annual cost but endorsed the measure as compatible with the 1978 budget. A tobacco marketing quotas bill was also signed to discourage non supported tobacco production and allocate quotas in compliant areas.
