Ford to launch Fiesta minicar rivaling VW Rabbit
Ford plans a West German built front wheel drive Fiesta hatchback, smaller and lighter than the Rabbit, to be assembled at Saarlouis and sold in the U.S. later this summer. It will compete with the Rabbit Chevette Honda CVCC and other small cars, with an initial goal of about 100000 yearly sales. The Fiesta is Ford's first world car, produced in several countries including Germany and Spain.

Carter energy plan may loosen clean air rules in some areas
EPA chief Douglas Costle told a Senate subcommittee that the Carter energy plan could ease clean air standards in heavily industrial regions as coal use rises from 600 million to about 1.2 billion tons by 1985. He noted pollutants would increase but offset by efficiency measures and nonpeak electricity savings. Muskie warned even small plants switching to coal could emit far more pollutants, while Congress weighs rival 2 to 4 year delays.
