Reagan OKs redistrict bill backed by Harmer Zenovich
Governor Reagan endorsed the Harmer Zenovich Senate reapportionment bill saying he would sign if unchanged. The plan preserves a 20 20 party balance, shifts one Northern California district to Southern California, and avoids creating an East Los Angeles Mexican American district.

Schmitz quits AIP to seek GOP return for Congress
Former congressman John G. Schmitz, who left the Republican Party and ran for president on the Afteshan Independent Party ticket, quits the AIP and reregisters as a Republican in a bid to reclaim his former seat. Schmitz, 42, was defeated in the June primary by Andrew Hinshaw, Orange County assessor, who won Schmitz's seat in the general election. He taught at Santa Ana College after the loss and cited internal squabbling and a desire for election stakes over party unity as reasons for leaving the AIP.
